Source: The Pueblo Chieftain, Colo.mini storageNov. 09--When the Navajo Code Talkers returned from service in World War II, they stayed silent about their specialized service for decades.Now the Marine Corps veterans are on a crusade to inform the younger generations of exactly what role they played in helping win the war."They need to know the history so they can pass it on to their children," said Alfred Newman, 89, a Code Talker from Kirtland, N.M., who was honored Friday at an assembly at Chavez Huerta K-12 Preparatory Academy."They need to know what the Native Americans had to do to defend America," Newman said.Newman and two fellow Code Talkers, Alfred Peaches, 89, and Robert Walley, 93, are in Pueblo to participate in Veterans Day activities.The trio will serve as marshals of today'sfrompage1A Veterans Day parade.The men are among the last 29 known living members of the military group credited with helping save lives and putting an end to the war.The Code Talkers used their native Navajo language to develop a code used to communicate during the war that the enemy could not break.The Code Tself storagelkers, who are now in their 80s and 90s, have formed a nonprofit organization in New Mexico designed to provide outreach, education and preservation of the Navajo Code Talker history, according to Victoria Jarvison, who is working with the group."When these men came back, they were told not to talk about their service," Jarvison said.
