Source: Chicago TribuneJan.mini storage 27--As the Monday morning commute got underway on what promises to be one of the coldest days of the winter, Metra was reporting some delays due to the potentially record-setting cold that's expected to blanket the area today."As always, we will make every reasonable effort to provide a timely and comfortable commute," a service alert posted to the agency's website read. "However, trains are likely to be delayed."Metra, which this morning has not experienced the paralysis on entire lines that it saw two weeks ago, has reported multiple delays and one cancellation on its website, mostly on the west suburban Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Union Pacific / North lines:--An inbound train on the BNSF line schedules to arrive in Chicago at 9:47 a.m. is running 15 to 20 minutes late because of other delays on the line. Two earlier BNSF trains were from 15 to 20 minutes late arriving at Union Station downtown because of weather related delays and equipment problems. BNSF also cancelled most stops for an outbound train that was scheduled to leave Union Station at 7:01 a.m. That train expressed from Chicago to Aurora and outbound commuters picked up a later train.--Metra also said that all inbound trains on the Union Pacific / North line may end up 10 to 20 minutes late because of weather conditions and earlier delays. This line also experienced some earlier inbound and outbound delays because of equipment problems and earlier delays on the line.--The Union Pacific / West line had some difficulties on outbound trains that resulted in delays of up to about 17 minutes.--An inbound train on the North Central Service was about 15 minutes late because of mechanical problems.--An inbound train on the Milwaukee District / North Line scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 9:22 a.m. is about 15 minutes behind schedule because of earlier delays. This line also had some delays on both inbound and outbound trains earlier in the morning."There have been no major issues," said Metra spokesman Michael Gillis, who said crews were on duty 24/7 over the weekend preparing for today. They cleared switches, kept locomotives running and performed other preventative work, he said. Trains were also fueled at outlying yards overnight as a precaution, he said.According to the CTA website, there are significant delays on the Purple Line this morning after trains experienced door problem earlier today, but trains are moving. Some "significant" delays had been reported earlier Monday on the Brown, Red and Yellow Lines; those problems have since sorted themselves outTemperatures at O'Hare International Airport dropped from a high of 31 degrees about 3:50 p.m. Sunday to minus 2 degrees about 9 a.m. Monday morning. They're expected to continue dropping throughout the day, accord迷你倉ng to the National Weather Service.Tuesday's low is expected to land between minus 15 and minus 20 degrees -- anywhere south of minus 13 would be a new record for Jan. 28.Another local commuter train line, the South Shore, is making changes in its Monday schedule because of the weather. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, which runs that line, said in an e-mailed press release Sunday that it will bus passengers between South Bend and Michigan City on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with no bus service to the Hudson Lake stop. All of those stations are in northwest Indiana.The agency also said that there may be speed restrictions and delays and that commuters should allow extra time to get to their destination.The weather has also caused havoc on some area roads. Illinois State Police south of Will County reported 200 stranded motorists who were shuttled to warming centers Sunday night after spinouts or fender benders. More than 80 vehicles are stuck in ditches or medians in Kankakee and Iroquois counties, the police reported Monday morning, and Interstate 57 in those areas is snow-covered and travel is hazardous.The roads south of Interstate 74, which runs across the state heading south east, are passable. North of that road along major interstates and the situation is a little more risky, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.Interstates 55 and 80, south and west of that interchange, are also in bad shape, police said. Interstate 65 south of Lowell is experiencing blowing and drifting snow, but other roads in northwest Indiana are not experiencing extraordinary problems.Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sgt. Jeanette Beck said there have not been any major weather related issues as of 8 a.m. and their expressways are mostly clear of snow."We have had a couple of accidents, but nothing out of the ordinary road-condition-wise," Beck said. She added their expressways are not having issues with blowing snow as other state police districts are.Reported crashes were a fender bender in the southbound local lanes of Dan Ryan at 31st Street, a semi truck that was overheating and needed assistance on the Edens Expressway and a property damage crash on the inbound Eisenhower Expressway between Mannheim and Wolf roads, she said.The Chicago Department of Aviation reports that about 435 flights were cancelled Monday at O'Hare International Airport and about 80 were cancelled at Midway International Airport.
