Africa presence part of globalization
By Andrew Moody ( China Daily) Ross Anthony says that China gets unfairly criticized for its role in Africa.self storage Mark Wessels / for China Daily South African academic sees China's involvement in continent as normal. Andrew Moody reports Ross Anthony believes accusations in the West that China is a new colonial power in Africa are a form of racism. The 36-year-old South African academic insists it is "hilarious" that the actions of Chinese corporations and businesses are conflated into some "grand State strategy"."If BP does something dodgy in Nigeria, nobody says that is 10 Downing Street's fault and David Cameron organized it all. But they do that with China."It is actually a form of racism. People actually want an enemy and China fits the bill. It is not rocket science to see that." Anthony was speaking in a seminar room at Stellenbosch University in South Africa's Western Cape province, where he is a research fellow at the Centre for Chinese Studies, the only such dedicated center in sub-Saharan Africa. The South African academic, who partly specializes in global security issues including threats to the environment, does not, however, regard China's economic involvement in Africa as completely benign."The reason why China is here is because they have joined the global economy. They pull stuff out of the ground, manufacture it in southern China and ship it globally, particularly to America, and then it is sold on the shelves of Wal-Marts," he says."This global consumption capitalist lifestyle is putting pressure on global resources and causing environmental problems, which are becoming a greater issue. So my take on this is that anxieties about China and Africa just obscure what the real problem is." Anthony, who was born in Durban but brought up in Johannesburg, returned to South Africa last year from Cambridge University, where he completed a doctorate in social anthropology.A China specialist with a particular focus on studying Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, he might have taken up a position at Oxford specializing in Islam in China instead."It was flattering. I went to some interviews and they called me back. It was a nice gig but I pulled back because I felt if I went deeper into Islam and Xinjiang, I would become stuck with that."Here there's so few people with expertise on China, there is no real space for specialization. People phone the China center and expect you to know everything from republican politics and the Ming Dynasty to Africa trade. I quite like that. It is far more exciting to be here. You have to know about everything." Anthony, whose languid manner only thinly disguises his sharp intellect, says that as an area of study the China-Africa relationship has grown almost exponentially over the last decade."In 2000, there were probably a few lone people studying the relationship but now there are institutions devoted to it, magazines and all various kinds of media set up based around it," he says.Anthony became interested in China by chance shortly after taking his first degree in art history at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg."I went to London and did a few arbitrary jobs in order to get enough money to go hiking in the Karakoram mountains in Pakistan. After a few months there I crossed the border and came to Xinjiang. I had no real interest in China but this just blew me away," he says. After doing a mas迷你倉er's degree in English literature at the University of Cape Town (where he admits to reading only books on China and not syllabus novels, such was his new interest) he returned to China, ending up as a lecturer in English at the National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan. He then won a Bill and Melinda Gates Scholarship, which enabled him to study social anthropology at Cambridge, both for an M Phil and a PhD.His doctorate focused on how political events since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) had affected the urban space of Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang."I was looking at the interface between politics and urban development and how the various political regimes since the Qing Dynasty had affected the social organization of the city." Urbanization remains one of Anthony's strong research interests at Stellenbosch. He believes the Chinese are different from many Africans in seeing city living as some form of ideal lifestyle."If there is a vision of contemporary China, what you might call a collective fantasy, it is urban."It is unlike Africa. We are constantly moving from the countryside to the city and back. The exception in China might be Uygurs. When they retire, they too want to move back to a nice house in the countryside." Anthony says the Chinese are beginning to export some of their urban planning ideas to Africa, particularly in such areas as the Chinese Eastern Industrial Zone near Addis Ababa, where a number of Chinese companies are based."As soon as you enter these zones it is like entering a slice of modern China from the way the flower beds are organized and all these slogans put up on the walls." Anthony does not think these Chinese zones will prove successful in the long run."When I first visited one, I thought they might be a possible future model for African development but they are no longer flourishing. There are a lot of issues and they are not taking off. There are five or six across Africa now and by the time I die I doubt whether there will be 50 or 100." Anthony believes that generally China gets unfairly criticized for its role in Africa."I think China has got a ridiculously bad rap in terms of its presence in Africa. It is shameful the way the West covers this, especially the left-leaning newspapers." He believes the Africa market might be more open to China because it doesn't have the colonial baggage some Western countries have."They came in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and they didn't do anything. They left and took just a few giraffes. They didn't colonize, although they did take African slaves to Guangzhou." He insists China is not neo-colonialist in Africa but says there is an inevitable imbalance in the relationship."You almost have to take more than give, otherwise it is not a sustainable relationship," he says."The Chinese, have done some brilliant things here, however. You have only got to go to Angola to see the transformation that has taken place by the construction of infrastructure." Anthony says there is very little difference between China's involvement in Africa and that of the West and it is in large part just about the spread of global capitalism."I think anxieties about this are misguided," he says."China is sometimes presented as some enemy but actually it is a country very much integrated into the global economic system. Any differentiation between China's engagement in Africa and that of the West is a false one."

mini storage

;self storage

Non-native stink bugs could hurt agriculture
Source: Mail Tribune, Medford, Ore.mini storageAug. 23--Insect researchers are finding alarmingly high numbers of non-native stink bugs in Ashland and elsewhere in the Bear Creek Valley, and warn of a potential infestation that could foul homes and damage orchards and vineyards. After a handful of brown marmorated stink bugs surfaced last year, they're popping up regularly this summer in Phoenix, Talent and Ashland. In Medford, the first of these bugs, commonly called Asian stink bugs, was discovered last week under a tree along East Jackson Street.Research crews walking the streets of downtown Ashland on Thursday shook stink bug after stink bug from maple and catalpa trees, where they found freshly laid eggs, and juvenile and adult bugs."I was blown away by this," said Nik Wiman, an Oregon State University researcher working on stink bugs to find a way to control them. "I walked all of these neighborhoods and didn't find anything last year. Then all of a sudden this year, they're everywhere. It's pretty impressive."The population is increasing fast," he said. "I'd say we're at the early states (of infestation), but it's certainly coming."Unlike native stink bugs, these insects can be considered household pests because they winter over in dwellings and release pungent odors that earn them their names. But olfactory offenses aside, they are voracious fruit eaters and they can cling to grapes at harvest time, with their odors altering wines if crushed along with grapes."Oh my goodness, another pest we'll have to deal with," said Ron Meyer of Meyer Orchards near Talent.Meyer said there are herbicides available to commercial growers to deal with these non-native bugs, but the insects also will cause problems for gardeners and organic farmers."We'll control them," Meyer said. "We'll do what it takes to protect our crops, but it means it will probably be more expensive."Some Willamette Valley vineyards already have been battling these stink bugs by employing machines that shake them off the vines before the grapes are processed, Wiman said.Pesticides also can help.self storageOr crop owners can hope that wasps lay their eggs inside the non-native sting bugs' eggs like they do Oregon stink-bug eggs, Wiman said."It's just a matter of them switching over," Wiman said. "They have to adapt over time."Wiman and his assistant, Shannon Davis, set up traps in Ashland as the team continues to work on improving trap baits to give orchardists and vintners tools to combat the bugs. The first of these bugs in Oregon was discovered in Portland in 2004, said Rick Hilton, an OSU Research and Extension Service biologist who joined Wiman on Thursday's collections. The stink bugs spread around the Willamette Valley, first invading homes, then backyard gardens. Last year, they began cropping up in farms, Wiman said.Earlier infestations in Eastern states such as Pennsylvania have caused millions of dollars in agricultural damage there. That has state agriculturists worried, particularly after Thursday's discovery."If it follows the pattern from back East, it's very much a matter of when, not if, it gets into agriculture," Oregon Department of Agriculture spokesman Bruce Pokarney said Thursday. The roundish bugs are similar to the native stink bugs, which don't winter in houses and their numbers are kept in check by predators such as wasps. The easiest way to tell the difference between the native and non-native species is that the non-native stink bugs have distinctly coal-colored antennas with a white band on them. Natives have more brownish antennae and any bands look more yellowish.Anyone who believes they have found a brown marmorated stink bug should compare it to photographs on OSU researchers' website by visiting .mailtribune.com/stink-bug. If they match, Wiman wants the findings reported to him at bmsb@oregonstate.edu."We want to hear from people in Southern Oregon," Wiman said. "They're definitely established and there's no reason to believe they're not going to increase."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Mail Tribune (Medford, Ore.) New-look Hornets expect to contend
Source: Messenger-Inquirer, Owensboro, Ky. Aug. 23--Powered by a lot of juice, Hancock County High School enjoyed an outstanding 2012 football season -- finishing 9-3 overall and reaching the second round of the Class 2-A KHSAA playoffs. Now, the Hornets will attempt to remain a viable 2-A contender without their primariy power source, Justin "Juice" Hamilton, a multifaceted dynamo who closed out his illustrious career with bang last fall -- rushing for 1,771 yards and 30 touchdowns, catching 19 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns and scoring five more times on kick and interception returns."Obviously, Hamilton is our biggest loss," Hancock County head coach Chris Morris said. "He was our leading rusher, leading tackler, and he scored 39 touchdowns last year -- we're going to have to pick it up in a lot of areas without him."Morris isn't sure what to expect."It is a weird year to predict for us," he said. "We only have three seniors on the roster, so this is a concern for sure, but we have 19 juniors and several of those juniors have played a lot in the past for us -- three of them have started since they were freshmen."We're looking for leadership. We need some of these juniors to learn to lead and take some of the burden away from a small senior class."OFFENSEThe loss of Hamilton's staggering production is bound to sting, but the cupboard is far from bear for the Hornets.Explosive Beau Case, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound junior, returns for his third season as a starter. Last year, Case rushed 687 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 11 yards per carry. He also caught 10 passes for 285 yards and five TDs."Beau is a great all-around player," Morris said. "He's very productive any time he gets his hands on the football."The Hornets also welcome back junior quarterback Koert Morris (6-3, 190), who threw for 959 yards and 10 touchdowns in nine games laat fall."Koert's role will be expanded this year on offense," Morris said. "He has the speed to be a dual-threat quarterback and will be asked to do that this year."Also back is two-year starting fullback Trevor Garrison (5-11, 190, Jr.), who rushed for 335 yards and scored five touchdowns.Graduation hit the Hornets hard on the line."Offensive keys will be how quickly the line gels with three new starters," Morris said, "and how well we catch the football to help protect the run game better."Hancock County's attack will be tweaked somewhat in 2013."We'll still run some of the Wing-T stuff we've run in the past," Morris said, "but we've cut down the amount of stuff we are doing out of it, and we've added more spread shotgun stuff this year. We want to be better throwing the ball th儲存倉s year and be more balanced."We still want to run the ball because we've been very good at that lately, but we have to be better at protecting the run game by making teams respect the pass."DEFENSEThe quick-to-the-ball Hornets will run out of their customary 3-4 set, and Morris expects it to be a productive unit."We are an aggressive, attacking defense," he said, "and we should be strong in the secondary again this season."Case will play a huge role from his strong safety position, where last season he made 46 tackles and made three interceptions -- returning each of them for touchdowns.Garrison will be one of the key linebackers, having accounted for 109 tackles last fall; included in that total were 10 tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks.Koert Morris will play free safety after registering 20 tackles and two interceptions a year ago."The key for us defensively will be getting three new starters at linebacker playing well," Chris Morris said.Last year's defense was stout, for the most part -- limiting four foes to less than 10 points and giving up an average of only 16.7 points in 10 regular-season games. The dam finally burst in the second round of the playoffs, when eventual Class 2-A state runner-up Caldwell County eliminated the Hornets 52-25 in Princeton.SPECIAL TEAMSMichael Vaeth and Justin Rogers are both competing to be place-kicker and punter for the Hornets."They're both juniors, and they will be first-time starters at these positions," Morris said. "Getting them ready will be the key for our special teams."Case, meanwhile, will be lurking as a breakaway-threat return man."Beau will be our primary guy for punts, and he's dangerous with the ball in return situations," Morris said. "Newcomers Austin Haaff, Justin Johnson, and Case, will handle kickoff return duties."OUTLOOKDespite a bevy of key losses, including Hamilton, tight end-linebacker Troy Lasley, tight end-defensive end Ben Basham, wide-receiver-cornerback Desmond Clarkson, along with two-way linemen Logan Howard and Dalton Whitaker, Morris expects Hancock County to remain a competitive force in 2-A."We expect to be good again and to compete for the district (championship)," he said. "How good we will be will depend on how how quickly some of the new guys come along and if this year's team will play as hard as last year's team."Owensboro Catholic will be very good again, and you'll have to beat them to win the district. Union County also returns a lot of talent."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Messenger-Inquirer (Owensboro, Ky.)
