Source: Standard-Examiner, Ogden, UtahAug. 27--For those of us looking to pinch our pennies, there's some good news and some bad news this week. The good news: Ogden was just named the second-best place in the country for niggards like us.The bad news: Enjoy it while you can, fellow tight-fisted skinflints. Because, odds are, next year Ogden goes back to being just another average city for the miserly. More on that later. The personal finance website Kiplinger.com just released its "10 Best Cities for Cheapskates" rankings, and little ol' Junction City was named first runner-up, behind cheap champ Omaha, Neb.How did the folks at Kiplinger come to this surprising decision? I was going to guess "coin flip," but apparently there's a little more involved in these annual rankings. It's a measure of prosperity and affordability, according to Kiplinger."Low costs plus fat paychecks can add up to big savings in Ogden," proclaims the website.Ah, yes. Those fat paychecks we're so well-known for here in Ogden. I don't know about you, fellow worker bees, but I frequently find myself in complete and utter awe of my fat paycheck. Indeed, I'm almost tempted to label it "morbidly obese."Basically, Kiplinger looked at cities where incomes are above the average and living costs are below it. Ogden's median household income is $62,340, 18.2 percent above the national average. And its cost of living is 10 percent below the rest of the country.Other factors plugged into the equation were the abundance (66) of "nearby" public libraries and museums -- which often offer free or nearly free things to do -- as well as the total number of Dollar General stores within 10 miles of downtown. (Two, in case anyone's keeping score.)It probably didn't hurt that one of our Scrooge-like sisters, Salt Lake City, clocked in at No. 7 on the list.Yes, but what does all this mean? It meansmini storagethat for tightwads like me, Utah is definitely Cheapskate Central. And yet, sadly, the odds are quite high that none of this will last. We know this, because in doing a little research we came across Kiplinger's 2012 list of best places for cheapskates. And the results were rather revealing. Believe it or not, only one city made the list both years.Last year's top spot went to St. Louis, Mo. This year, the Gateway to the West was still there, but it dropped all the way to No. 9. In every other case, cities that made the 2012 list were nowhere to be found in 2013.Seriously? In just one year, nine towns that were rated among the 10 best places for misers -- El Paso, Texas; Springfield, Ill.; Kalamazoo, Mich; Spokane, Wash.; San Antonio, Texas; Eau Claire, Wis.; South Bend, Ind.; Jonesboro, Ark.; and Wichita, Kan. -- effectively dropped off the radar, replaced by nine completely different cheapskate towns? (Omaha, Neb.; Ogden; Des Moines, Iowa; Columbus, Ohio; Raleigh, N.C.; Cincinnati; Salt Lake City; Austin, Texas; Cedar Rapids, Iowa)Curious, to be sure. This can only mean one of two things:1. There really is that much fluctuation from year to year in cost of living and median income among the states.2. Kiplinger simply pulls these rankings out of its assets, and tweaks the weighted factors to spread the love from year to year.Whatever the reason, I fear that 2014 isn't going to be a particularly banner year for us niggards in the Ogden area, as we fall out of the rankings and are replaced by some other seemingly randomly selected city.Hopefully we'll still have our fat paychecks to console us.Contact Mark Saal at 801-625-4272, msaal@standard.net, or follow him on Twitter at @Saalman.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Standard-Examiner (Ogden, Utah) Visit the Standard-Examiner (Ogden, Utah) at .standard.net Distributed by MCT Information Servicesself storage

Tourist dollars, from the Chinese in particular, are helping the Canadian economy chug along. I have been keeping tabs on developments in Canada as I visit relatives there every summer. Canadians have a slow pace of life, and I have noticed very few changes to its cities in my visits over the years. However, as Chinese increasingly go out into the world, even a quiet place like Canada is feeling some impact. My relative told me of a brand-name store that just opened shop in Toronto, and it is crowded all the time. I went to check it out on a weekday afternoon and, sure enough, there was a queue outside. Inside, I saw many mainland customers happily snapping up the products. No wonder shopping malls there are also making public announcements in Putonghua and Cantonese these days. The prices at that store were not particularly low, unlike brand-name products sold at discounts in some stores. My relative said locals cross the border to shop in the United States if they really want good prices. That led me to surmise that the c迷你倉owd I saw at the mall where the shop is located must comprise mostly visitors from China. The Canadian dollar has been firmed up by high oil prices in recent years, but that has put pressure on production costs. The minimum wage there is more than C$10 per hour (HK$73.72) - higher than even US rates. The US government, meanwhile, has been driving down the value of the greenback after the financial tsunami. Coupled with low wages, the US manufacturing sector has been regaining some of its competitiveness. In the absence of immigrants and visitors from China, I suspect the Canadian economic conditions would deteriorate. So Canada is wise to be working hard to strengthen its relationship with China to reduce reliance on its southern neighbor. Big in size and rich in natural resources, and with a relatively small population, Canada has what China wants. Therefore, so long as China keeps up its pace of development, Canada will be receiving benefits from it for a long time to come. Siu Sai-wo is chief editor of Sing Tao Daily

Eviction order to be served on entire block on Friday unless residents can rally support to force property onto URA redevelopment listResidents of a building in To Kwa Wan are racing against time to avoid eviction from their dangerous tenement by Friday, banking on possible support from the Urban Renewal Authority to redevelop the site. Spirits were lifted at the six-storey, 56-year-old block by news that the owner of nearby block No45 was open to redeveloping that building, Kowloon West lawmaker Helena Wong Pik-wan said yesterday.Agreement from that owner would help the residents reach a majority consensus on an overhaul, piling pressure on the authority to step in, Wong said. That might in turn halt the Buildings Department’s attempt to secure a closure order from the courts that would allow it to remove all the balconies, which account for a quarter of each flat’s size and are structurally dangerous.Subdivided cubicles abound on the enclosed balconies and are believed to be a major reason the structures are fast deteriorating, engineers and surveyors say.Wong said redevelopment was the best solution.“Will the building survive if its balconies are sliced off? It’s uncertain,” she said. “The elderly residents paid a lot for the last building renovation. They can’t afford more.”Last week, occupants of all 14 flats at 51 Kai Ming Street, many of which are subdivided, were told 新蒲崗迷你倉n a department notice to move out by Friday, when the closure order is due. The government intends to resettle them in interim housing in Tuen Mun.Yesterday, members of Wong’s Democratic Party were gathering more information, including pictures and videos that showed the poor interiors of neighbouring blocks for the authority’s consideration. They aim to help the residents join the authority’s demand-led redevelopment scheme, under which any site to be rebuilt must measure at least 400 square metres and have the backing of at least two-thirds of the property owners for an overhaul.Wong said preliminary checks showed close to 80 per cent of owners of flats in buildings from 21 to 51 Kai Ming Street wanted a redevelopment. It is understood that the owner of block No45 owns more than one building in the street, which URA advisers have proposed for priority redevelopment.“Another option is that the authority should initiate the redevelopment after assessing the building and social conditions there,” Wong said.Wan Shu-kau is a long-term resident of the street aged in his 70s, and lives at No33. He said redevelopment was long overdue. Wan said he paid about HK$40,000 a few years ago for URA-subsidised renovations that did not fix all the problems.“I would be more than happy with redevelopment,” he said. The department said it might postpone the order to allow more time for relocation.mini storage

Source: Daily Camera, Boulder, Colo. Aug. 24--Mike MacIntyre had already answered a dozen questions from the media following a mid-August practice when he agreed to spend a little extra time walking and talking with a reporter. The course covered a couple hundred yards through the dirt parking lot outside the Colorado football practice fields, over Boulder Creek, up a steep hill -- all too familiar to any current or former Buff -- to the northeast gates of Folsom Field. The topic of conversation was MacIntyre's plan for rebuilding the proud college football program he now oversees. When asked for the nuts and bolts of his plan for bringing the Buffaloes back from 1-11 laughing stock to Pac-12 Conference title contender, MacIntyre deadpanned, "How long a walk is this?"It's a big job no doubt. It's one that already overwhelmed MacIntyre's two predecessors Jon Embree and Dan Hawkins. It's a challenge some in the college football world believe he was crazy to try to tackle. No winning seasons in seven years. One bowl game in that span. Facilities lagging behind the competition. In-state recruits fleeing the sight of black, silver and gold.If MacIntyre doesn't succeed, the CU program is in real danger of becoming known as a place where coaches go to die. Some might say it already is.So how is he going to fix it all and restore the Colorado brand to the respect it carried throughout the 1990s and early 2000s?"Everybody says it, but it's true," MacIntyre said. "It's setting the culture the way you want it."You've got to get the young men to believe in that and start doing it on a 365-day-a-year basis, 24 hours a day. Once they start doing that and start buying in to everything and caring about each other, then when recruits come and other people start seeing it, they come in as freshmen and they get with the upperclassmen and they understand the culture and it reverberates and the next class comes in and it reverberates. You just keep growing."That's how you ultimately change your program. It's the young men in your program and it's everybody around your program that have hands on those young men to help guide them. Then it's how you practice and your work ethic and your focus. All of that goes hand-in-hand."MacIntyre believes he and his staff are already well down the road toward establishing that culture. He watched numerous members of last year's team depart during the offseason for other programs, other sports or other pursuits all together. Some of them might have been successful if only they stuck with it. Others needed to go and MacIntyre wasn't above cutting ties with them once he believed he had given them every opportunity."I would probably say accountability," wide receivers coach Troy Walters said when asked to name the biggest challenge CU coaches found when they were hired. "When we got here, guys were kind of doing their own things. It wasn't a team, family culture. 'We're in this thing together.' It was guys here and guys there. So I think that is the No. 1 thing we're trying to accomplish is just bringing everyone together and understand this is a team and a family and we're only going to go as far as the team."Support will be pivotalThe assumption is that since MacIntyre was able to turn around San Jose State, he ought to be able to conquer the ghosts haunting CU. The Buffs have won national titles and Heisman Trophies in the past after all.In some ways, MacIntyre feels like he's already ahead of where he was three years ago when he took over at San Jose State and eventually turned a moribund program into a top 25 team with a bowl win.Back in 2010, some around San Jose State were talking about disbanding the football program all together. The Spartans were serving penalties under the NCAA's APR system that included limiting practice time each week. While there might be a few kooks on campus who would like to get rid of the CU athletic department, the Buffs face no threat of being phased out and they are succeeding with APR. In fact, CU leaders have shown they are eager to put a more competitive product on the field by investing in MacIntyre and his staff by doubling the football coaches' salary poolfrom what it was when Embree was coach. They also are beginning the process of raising money for $170 million in facilities improvements. And they hired a new $700,000-a year athletic director to lead the charge in raising that money."A little bit of the difference here is there is more people at this point, eight months into it, concerned and believing that it can be successful," MacIntyre said. "At San Jose State, it was a program that was on lifeline. They were even thinking about dropping. There weren't as many people concerned."... I just feel more of a swell, more support, more passion by more people. Nothing against the other place. It's been done here before in a big-time way. They want to do it again. I think the other thing that is different is they have moved into the Pac-12 and everybody wants to show that the move was beneficial to the university and will help the university."Defensive coordinator Kent Baer spent three seasons with MacIntyre at San Jose State and could have stayed there, maybe even as head coach if he had wanted, as opposed to coming to Boulder.Baer said he has never worked with a coach with a better work ethic than MacIntyre in his four decades in the sport. That, mixed with the tradition and history of CU, was more than enough to convince Baer that he could help MacIntyre resurrect the Colorado program. The blueprint might be different, but he believes they can do here just as they did at San Jose State."Mac knows," Baer said. "He's firm. He's positive and he's demanding. He knows football. He knows offense. He knows defense anmini storage he knows the kicking game. I think the staff that he has hired has done a great job buying into his system. I don't see anybody ever fighting the system. Sometimes you get on a staff and the guys don't get along or they don't totally understand and they want to do it their way no matter what. I think that was a real selling point to me."MacIntyre has the support of his bosses and his assistant coaches, but most important to any rebuilding project is the support of the fans. Ultimately, the voices of people in the seats on Saturday afternoons or nights in Folsom Field are the ones who decide whether a coaching staff is getting the job done.CU fans are all out of patience, but they're going to need to muster up some reserves to allow MacIntyre the time he needs. This is the Pac-12 and not the Western Athletic Conference of the past few years. It's likely going to take him longer to produce an 11-2 season in Boulder against the likes of USC, UCLA, Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon State and Washington than it did at San Jose State.Earning that patience with consistent improvement will be key to MacIntyre's success or failure here."I really believe that if he didn't think it could be done, he wouldn't have come," Baer said. The MacIntyre wayDuring his introductory news conference in December, MacIntyre introduced CU fans to his slogan. It was a breath of fresh air after the tenure of each of his predecessors ended with those coaches complaining about all the things they didn't have at CU."No excuses, no regrets," MacIntyre said. The men who work with MacIntyre say he is a detail-oriented grinder who doesn't leave things to chance. But he's not necessarily stuck in his ways or committed to one style of getting the job done. He embraces creative, innovative thinking in a competitive and demanding way."That's one thing good about coach Mac, we spend a long time talking about what we need to do to win the game," offensive line coach Gary Bernardi said. "Do we need to throw the ball 60 times or do we need to run it 70. We spend a long time talking about that from Sunday to Thursday or Friday."Perhaps the most vital part of MacIntyre's plan for rebuilding the Buffs centers around recruiting. Again, it is a part of the game in which MacIntyre attempts to out-work the competition. He cares little about recruiting rankings. Sure, he wants many of the four and five-star players that every other school in the nation is pursuing and he believes he will get his share as Colorado shows improvement. But he built San Jose State into a winner by finding good players that other programs had overlooked. Hawkins and Embree attempted to do the same thing in their stints as head coach in Boulder and both brought some good players to Boulder, but both missed more often or took chances on players with questionable character.Almost every member of MacIntyre's staff evaluates every recruit and they tend to project what each player will become, rather than viewing them simply as the player and the position they are in high school."The one thing I think we do a really good job of is the evaluation of kids in high school," Baer said. "We really don't care who is recruiting them or how many stars they have. That doesn't mean anything to me. It means zero. We look and project and say, 'Wow, we think this guy can be really, really good some day.' Now, you'd love to get some of those five-star guys, but a lot of those guys never pan out."MacIntyre is going to have to find more success doing that here to get the Buffs back on track. The reality is, not many four- and five-star players are interested in a team that is 4-19 the past two years and hasn't been to a bowl game since 2007.When he starts to win some games, it should become easier to land bigger fish through the beauty of the CU campus, the vibrant Boulder community, the quality of education offered and the chance to play in the Pac-12.When those players arrive in Boulder to begin their college careers, they find a support system designed to teach them how to succeed on and off the field."Everything is mapped out," Walters said. "Everything is specific. Everything we do, there is a reason behind it. We don't do anything just to do it. Whether it's a practice period or the practice schedule itself or the whole day's schedule, there is a purpose and a reason. We're very organized and pay attention to detail."Colorado isn't in as deep a hole as San Jose State was when MacIntyre took over because it isn't facing the academic problems the Spartans had three years ago. Another aspect of this rebuilding job that is different is the fact that MacIntyre began the process at San Jose State as a rookie head coach surrounded by coaches with whom he was working with for the first time, including three defensive coaches who were in their first season as full-time college coaches.MacIntyre now has three years of experience as a head coach and he brought most of his staff with him from San Jose State. The familiarity and experience together should help MacIntyre avoid some of the same problems he encountered in bringing the Spartans back from the dead."I will make you proud, I promise you," MacIntyre said to former athletic director Mike Bohn in December. "We will work tirelessly, we will work correctly, and we will work with passion. I think as you get to know me, you will say one thing about Mike MacIntyre, he has passion. You might say some other things, but you are going to say that I have passion."And he has a plan.Contact staff writer Kyle Ringo at ringok@dailycamera.com or twitter.com/kyleringo.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Daily Camera (Boulder, Colo.)

Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteAug. 25--WASHINGTON -- Throngs of weary but determined people chanted, carried signs and marched along the National Mall Saturday to pay tribute to civil rights leaders of the 1960s and to inspire a new generation of activists to take up the reins. The idea was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. But to many who marched Saturday, including King's son, this was more of a continuation than a remembrance."This is not the time for nostalgic commemoration, nor is this the time for self-congratulatory celebration," Martin Luther King III said from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial where his father delivered his famous speech in 1963. "The task is not done. The journey is not complete. We can do more."The Rev. Al Sharpton, whose National Action Network helped organize Saturday's anniversary march, called on Congress to fix the Voting Rights Act, asked states to repeal voter identification laws and asked courts to strike down the kind of stand-your-ground laws that, he said, allowed a Florida jury to acquit George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin."We must give your young people dreams again," Mr. Sharpton told tens of thousands from across the country who searched for shade, sipped water and fanned themselves while they strained to see and hear speakers whose remarks were shown on several giant screens between the Lincoln and World War II memorials.Eric Holder, the nation's first black attorney general, and Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., the only surviving speaker from the 1963 March on Washington, were among the speakers.South Hills native Arlette Travis Dolphin was among Saturday's attendees. She boarded a bus in Charlotte, N.C., at midnight Friday to get to the march on time."I came to honor the memory of Dr. King and the work of our forefathers. The benefits we are enjoying now never would have happened without them," said Ms. Dolphin, 49. "But I'm also here because there is so much more to be done."Her friend Carmen Bray, a McKeesport native who also lives in Charlotte, said she couldn't help but think of the 1963 marchers as her bus made its 400-mile overnight trip.Fifty years ago, black travelers stopping for coffee might have been denied service in a diner en route and probably wouldn't have been able to find a hotel willing to rent a room to African-Americans.That has changed, but other groups still struggle, said Ms. Bray, 40. "A civil right is everybody's right. That belief is something very, very important."Jesse N. Holmes of Washington, D.C., had a much shorter trek to get to the mall, but the journey still took him back 50 years. He was 6 then and remembered his father dressing in a suit and a straw fedora to go to the march that steamy August morning. "I remember clearly him getting dressed for it and opening that front door. He turned to my mother saying, 'Come on. We have to go,' and she wouldn't," he said, explaining that many were afraid the march would become violent.Saturday morning, Mr. Holmes walked out the same front door, donned a similar straw fedora and put on a pasteboard sign with a 1963 photo Ebony magazine ran of his father participating in the original march."I want to honor him," said Mr. Holmes, 56, a stage actor. He also came to help advance the civil rights movement. "I want to see more profound evidence of equal opportunity. ... I still want to see the dream realized. That's why we're here: to reclaim it."Others came to support a plethora of specific causes. Some advocated to keep post offices open or to increase the minimum wage. Others came seeking an end to human trafficking, racial profiling, gun violence and uranium mining. Some said the cacophony of voices diluted the messa迷你倉新蒲崗e, but others said there is room in the national conversation for all voices and that all the varying advocacy groups were united in a common quest to make the world better for all people."It seems everybody here has different causes, but they're all taking a stand and that's what's important," Homewood native Stephonie Rivers said before the march.Around her, some waved the rainbow flags of the gay-rights movement while others chanted "No justice, no peace," and one man held a sign saying "Wipe out poverty."Ms. Rivers noted that with an African-American in the White House, many people think there's no longer a need to fight for equality. She disagrees: Black people are still living in poverty, facing job discrimination, finding impediments to voting and enduring racism, both subtle and overt, she said.Having a black president "does tell our children, 'Yes, you can do anything,' and it does give our children hope, but this fight isn't over," said Ms. Rivers, who now lives in the Poconos.Hundreds of Pennsylvanians made the trip, including Linda Weyandt of Altoona, who also attended the 1963 march. She was 15 then and in town with her father who had business at the Pentagon. Now, 50 years later, unfinished business brought her back."Once I got here [in 1963] and heard what was going on, I had to be there," Ms. Weyandt said. "As a teenage white American, you don't really understand until you go to the South and see outhouses for blacks only and bathrooms for whites only."Ms. Weyandt said those images from family trips to Texas galvanized her interest in the civil rights movement 50 years ago, and the slow progress has kept her interested today and led her to come back for the anniversary march with her grown daughter. She said Saturday's anniversary march had a different energy than the original. "Then there was hope," she said, standing on the National Mall. "Now it's more frustration. We haven't done enough."Monisa Webb, 45, of Beaver Falls arrived with five busloads of Service Employees International Union members. She came for the history of the moment and to honor King's legacy."Martin Luther King gave his life for our rights, and we have to keep fighting so things will get better," she said. "Being a part of this moment is a blessing."DeWitt Walton of United Steelworkers International organized a bus caravan from Pittsburgh. He was just 11 during the original march, but he remembers being inspired by it nonetheless. He first heard about it from a beloved geography and history teacher at Pulaski Middle School in Gary, Ind."He told us if you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem. If you're not here to engage in direct action then you'll always be a second-class citizen," said Mr. Walton, of the Hill District. It's something he has remembered all his life and it's something that was on his mind Saturday. "There was a sense of pride then, a sense of the need to engage, to achieve more," he said before the march. The original march was a powerful moment in U.S. history and "this is an effort to galvanize the effort for the masses of Americans of all ethnicities, all genders and all political persuasions," Mr. Walton said. "It's about making America live up to its commitment to make all Americans equal."The commemoration continues Wednesday, the official anniversary of the Aug. 28, 1963, march. President Barack Obama and former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter will speak on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.Washington Bureau chief Tracie Mauriello: tmauriello@post-gazette.com, 703-996-9292 and on Twitter: @pgPoliTweets.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Visit the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at .post-gazette.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉出租
