Former country musician Bernice Turner dies
Source: The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tenn. Aug. 21--"Strong" is how Robby Turner described his mother, Bernice Hilburn Turner, a musician who played rhythm guitar with the late Hank Williams in the 1940s and later ran a successful customized bus business for performers.Mrs. Turner died Friday in Nashville at 86 after a long illness."Her strength came from her inner self," said Robby, a noted steel guitar player living in Nashville. "She gave others her spirit. When other people were weak or hurting or needing that strength, she could uplift you and give you strength by her words and actions."She also had physical strength, Robby said, recalling the time his mother heard some women talking a little too familiar about Doyle Turner, her husband at the time. "She knocked both of them clean out. She decked both of them."Mrs. Turner lived in Memphis until about 2 1/2 years ago, when Robby took her to live with him in Nashville, where he had long talks with her. "I have four or five hours of audio (of her). I brought her in my studio and talked to her before her mind got bad."She told him, "When I was a kid, I used to dream. Dream big. 'Cause we had nothing. ... I have done more in my life than I have ever dreamed.' "Mrs. Turner was born in Black Rock, Ark., and ran away at 12 to live with an aunt in Walnut Ridge. She played her guitar outside a restaurant where she worked as a dishwasher. When she was 15, she moved to Panama City, Fla., to sing with a country band. She met Doyle Turner in the band and they married in 1944. They traveled around Florida wimini storageh a band led by guitarist Jimmy Bryant.Hank Williams then hired Doyle as steel guitar player and Mrs. Turner as rhythm guitarist for his band, Hank Williams and the Drifting Cowboys. Mrs. Turner played rhythm guitar with the band from early 1945 to December 1946 with Williams and his band. In a 2000 interview with The Commercial Appeal, Mrs. Turner said she performed some of the Williams' hits before they were recorded. "I thank God for the privilege of being there with Hank," she said. "When he was sober, he had this inferiority complex. But when he started drinking, there was no stopping him. He'd go until he passed out."The Turners left Williams after Doyle was drafted. After he completed his service, they moved to Blytheville, Ark., and led their own band, Doyle Turner & the Famous National Hillbillies. When Robby, one of their five children, joined Ace Cannon's band as a steel guitar player at age 14, Doyle and Mrs. Turner bought a GMC 4104 bus for the group and Doyle became the bus driver. They eventually opened Silver Eagle Bus Service, a fleet of seven customized buses they leased to stars. The Turners later divorced and Doyle died in 1991.In addition to Robby, Mrs. Turner leaves a daughter, Marie 'P. J.' Turner in Pensacola, Fla.; and a brother, David Hilburn, in Blytheville.A memorial service is being planned to be held in Memphis in about four weeks, Robby said.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Commercial Appeal (Memphis, Tenn.) 2013 FOOTBALL PREVIEWS: Dolenga bringing pride back to alma mater
Source: Appeal-Democrat, Marysville, Calif. Aug. 21--John Dolenga knows all about East Nicolaus High's rich football tradition. The second-year coach is in the process of attempting to reestablish pride and spirit into his alma mater. It's been five years since the Spartans have hoisted a Northern Section championship banner -- that's eons for anybody familiar with this program's legacy.East Nicolaus has seven section titles and eight runner-up plaques in its trophy case. The Spartans haven't made it out of the first round since 2008.Dolenga isn't going to let this recent trend of hovering around .500 and one-and-done playoff appearances become the Spartans' new tradition. He attended a three-day coaches clinic at De La Salle in Concord to learn all he could from one of the nation's elite high school football programs. He watched film this offseason to see how he could become a better coach.Last week, he was at the campus, painting buildings, pulling weeds and sprucing up Wahl Field with his players so they can know and feel the pride he has in his school.Dolenga smiled the entire time he spoke of what it means to him to coach the school he graduated from in 1977.He remembers when the campus moved to its current location during his sophomore year of high school. The football players had to take the bus back and forth to utilize the fields at the old campus, located at the current South Sutter Little League facility. The former Spartan quarterback, who ran the veer offense under legendary coach Geoff Wahl, is hoping this season can be the one that ends the program's recent skid."This is as special as it gets," Dolenga said. "It really means a lot to me that the community has me coaching for them. It feels good to know that the guys I went to school with and families I've known for so long trust me to coach their kids."East Nicolaus will potentially suit up 50 players this season as the Spartans eye a Mid-Valley League title and a possible return to postseason relatively.Dolenga believes it's a simple formula -- his team had to tackle and block."I want to see us hit and compete," Dolenga said. "We need 100 percent effort, that's what we're looking for from these players."Dolenga specifically mentioned his offensive line's importance to the Spartans' success this year.Led by bookend tackles Austin Jones and B.J. Kendrick, along with center Forrest Van Dyke, they will need to give returning quarterback Zamini storageh Schuler time to make things happen."We have to be able to block or it's going to be ugly," Dolenga said. "I think after last year, everyone is getting the offensive philosophy down. These guys are really far ahead compared to last season."East Nic went 6-5 last season with a 3-2 mark in the Mid-Valley League, good enough for three-way tie for second place with Colusa and Quincy. The 2012 season ended on a sour note with 41-14 loss to eventual section-champion Willows in the first round of the Division III playoffs."I won't say last season exceeded my expectation, but I think we did all right, considering what we had," Dolenga said. "Of course, we're not happy with the way things ended, but a lot of that has to do with us coaches needing to pick it up a little bit. We're not going to blame players for anything."A huge bright spot was the emergence of Schuler at quarterback, who showed dual-threat capabilities. He threw for 997 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also rushing for 763 touchdowns and 10 more scores.Schuler returns under center as does his top target from last year, A-D All-Area wideout Francisco Silvas, who caught 18 balls for 308 yards and four touchdowns. At flanker is junior Dylan Thornsberry, who caught 16 passes for 379 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore, providing Schuler with two reliable targets."We still have a lot of work to do, but we're meshing really well," Schuler said. "It's really nice because we all built a lot of chemistry last year."Schuler is joined in the backfield by Jeffrey Limary, who carried the ball 59 times last season for 408 yards and four touchdowns in a reserve role.Limary will be the feature back and share backfield responsibilities with Malika Williams, a junior fullback.Defensively, T.J. Masse returns at linebacker where he led the Spartans with 117 tackles in 2012.Dolenga also mentioned Cameron Skelly, Stephon Wong, and the Thornsberry brothers, Bretley and Tyler, along with the aforementioned Dylan, as key contributors this season."We're just trying to change the culture and get these kids to work hard," Dolenga said. "We have to believe we can play with anybody. We have to think we can win every time we take that field."CONTACT Sports Editor Jimmy Graben at 749-4791Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Appeal-Democrat (Marysville, Calif.) Legendary post-punk rockers to stage
Since it was formed in 1997, the Beijing-based quartet P.文件倉K.14 has been on the frontlines of China’s underground rock community. They have staged sold-out shows in New York City and Washington, DC, and are now on “A Dangerous Tour,” an ambitious 29-city nationwide tour in China that will bring them to Mao Livehouse on August 31.“Tours are always tough but it’s always exciting to meet different people and see different places,” says frontman Yang Haisong of the tour that will take the group as far north as Harbin in Heilongjiang Province and as far west as Xining in Qinghai Province. The lone original member of the group, Yang has won praise for his poignant lyrics about alienated urban youth. It’s a subject that figures prominently in P.K.14’s newly released fifth album, “1984,” after George Orwell’s 1949 dystopian classic “Nineteen Eighty-Four.”“The book is very famous in China,” Yang explains. “When we finished the album, we found it has the same subject as the novel. It’s about people trying to live with a history that has been rewritten or forgotten and about the organized falsehoods under the system. We think the name is perfect for the album. ”Renowned for its thoughtfulness, P.K.14 is commonly considered the Chinese equivalent of such post-punk legends as Talking Heads and Sonic Youth. The band is comprised of Yang, guitarist Xu Bo, bassist Shi Xudong and drummer Tan Tan. They have said their name stands for Public Kingdom for Teens. The band is rooted musically in the post-punk tradition and Yang is inspired lyrically by early rock troubadours such as Woodie Guthrie and Bob Dylan.Despite the Western influences, Yang performs predominantly in Mandarin and has won praise for lyrics that tap into the feelings of disaffected youth.“I would say that people are getting more alienated but I hope I am wrong,” he adds.Since mov存倉ng from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, to Beijing in 2001, P.K.14 has been one of China’s most successful underground rock bands. Early albums such as 2004’s “Whoever, Whoever & Whoever” and 2005’s “White Paper” are considered classics and have inspired later Beijing bands.Esteemed indie label Maybe Mars’ boss Michael Pettis argues that “most of the city’s best underground rock bands are either children of Joyside who exemplify freedom, rebellion and rage or children of P.K.14 who showed how rock could express their thoughts, emotions and curiosity as fully as any other art medium.”The group was nominated for Best Band at the 2006 Chinese Music Media Awards and named by TIME magazine as one of Asia’s Five Best Bands in 2008. Since releasing “City Weather Sailing” in 2008, P.K.14 has toured the United States and headlined a music festival in Vietnam, while playing more than 50 shows across China.“We also wrote a lot of material for the album,” Yang adds. The 11-track “1984” was produced by the band’s longtime Swedish producer Henrik Oja and was recorded last October in Chicago by famed American producer Steve Albini. Best known for producing Nirvana’s “In Utero,” Albini is known for his raw recording techniques.“Working with Albini is amazing,” Yang says. “He’s very professional and pretty relaxed. People can recognize the Albini sound on the album early on. That’s what we wanted for these songs.”The album is available online and the new songs will be performed on the current and longest tour that runs until early October.“The audiences in cities like Shanghai, Nanjing and Chengdu are always great,” Yang says.Date: August 31, 8:30pmVenue: Mao Livehouse, 308 Chongqing Rd S. Senate Republicans' tepid reaction could slow 70-mph bill
Source: Milwaukee Journal SentinelAug. 20--MADISON -- A freshman lawmaker Tuesday predicted speedy passage of his legislation to raise the state's top speed limit to 70 mph to mirror other states, but Senate Republicans immediately tapped the brake on the proposal. In the Senate, where a lead sponsor for the bill hasn't yet been chosen, Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau made clear the proposal isn't likely to pass during next month's session. The legislation could be a boon to time-starved commuters in the state but also a killer for the unwary driver."We are still in the process of setting the fall agenda for the Senate," Fitzgerald said in a statement. "There are no plans to tackle the speed limit proposal any time soon."Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills), co-chairwoman of the Legislature's powerful budget committee, said she was more focused on the economy and bills to improve schools, adding that she "has no idea" why the speed limit proposal is coming up now."(It's) not an issue I'm going to be spending a lot of time on," Darling said.Gov. Scott Walker didn't offer any more encouragement. His spokeswoman said he'd take a look at the proposal if and when it passed and the Republican governor's Department of Transportation offered only a polite no comment.Earlier that morning, Rep. Paul Tittl (R-Manitowoc) unveiled the proposal with high hopes ahead of Labor Day -- one of the busiest travel weekends of the year."I'm confident that by the end of the year we'll be looking at this signed into law," Tittl said at a news conference. The speed limit on interstates and other four-lane highways with medians in Wisconsin is 65 mph. The bill would raise that to 70 mph but give the state Department of Transportation some leeway to set the speed lower in areas such as cities.Gov. Pat Quinn of Illinois on Monday approved raising his state's limit to 70 mph over the objections of his own Department of Transportation. Thirty-six other states, including Minnesota, Iowa and Michigan, have limits of 70 mph or more on at least parts of their highways. The higher speed limits have become so popular that Wisconsin is now the only state between Pennsylvania and Oregon to have a speed迷你倉價錢limit of 65 mph, with many of the more rural western states having speed limits of 75 mph. The trend of higher speed limits began after Congress removed federal speed limits in 1995.Charles Franklin, who polls state residents for the Marquette University Law School, said he's not aware of any polling on attitudes about the issue in just Wisconsin.Even national polling on the issue is relatively old, Franklin said, looking more at the now mostly settled question of a 55-mph speed limit vs. a 65-mph one.Research shows that higher speeds have an effect on safety. The Insurance Institute on Highway Safety reports that repeated studies have shown that raising the speed limit leads to faster driving, more dangerous crashes and more deaths on the nation's roads.Andy Franken, president of the Wisconsin Insurance Alliance, said his association of state insurers is still evaluating the bill and the issue.Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) said Tuesday he wished the state's speed limits had been raised sooner, noting again that a number of Wisconsin's neighbors have raised their limits to 70 mph.He said he is open to conversations about road safety and that his staff is working with state DOT officials.Vos said the department had already mapped out the potential effects of raising the limit in a preliminary report provided to his staff earlier this year. Neither Vos' office nor the DOT immediately provided that preliminary report.Vos' support is key to getting legislation through the Republican-controlled Assembly. But the proposal also will need support from Walker and the Senate to pass.Former Sen. Tom Reynolds (R-West Allis) attempted to raise Wisconsin's speed limit to 75 mph in 2005, but his proposal went nowhere.Top Republican legislators, including the chairs of the Assembly and Senate committees on transportation, opposed the higher limit at the time, and then-Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat, said it would "be pretty hard to sign into law."Journal Sentinel reporter Akbar Ahmed contributed to this report from Milwaukee.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Visit the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel at .jsonline.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉庫
