Bullying of LGBT people unacceptable
It is extremely unfortunate that those who are against equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have to resort to hyperbole and misinformation to justify their fear and discriminatory views on the issue. The Bible is not banned in countries with robust legislation that protects LGBT people from discrimination, nor are dissenting views silenced. Violence against anyone should be condemned, period. On the contrary, we continue to see people using religion as a justification for bullying and attacking LGBT people. Is this acceptable in a civil society?Medical statistics do not say there imini storage a higher possibility of gay people contracting HIV.It is a well-known scientific fact that the major risk factors are unsafe sex, multiple sex partners and the use of intravenous drugs. If a gay man follows safe sex guidelines, then his chance of contracting HIV is no higher than a comparable straight man.Homosexuality is not a lifestyle choice, and it is well established that stigmatisation, prejudices and discrimination against LGBT people have significant social and personal costs. This negative scenario is simply unacceptable and should be rejected by anyone who has an ounce of humility.Jerome Yau, Happy Valleyself storage

The tech-savvy fish farmer
Malcolm Ong devised an innovative system to help him solve issues plaguing his fish farms, says NG ZHUO YANGTHE Metropolitan Fishery Group (MFG) runs four offshore fish farms along the Straits of Johor. With an annual production capacity of 600 tonnes of fish - working out roughly to 1.2 million fish, each 500g in weight on average - MFG claims to be Singapore's largest production farm. But the going is getting tougher, said its chief executive Malcolm Ong.Besides the usual problems of disease and survivability, there is also the issue of a drop in dissolved oxygen in the seawater, where MFG has its net cages of fish.He is unable to attribute the problem of lower oxygen levels in the water to the rapid development of Malaysia's economic region of Iskandar, or even to broader natural phenomena like climate change, but he is sure of one thing - dips in the level of dissolved oxygen in the waters have become more prevalent since 2007, when MFG started up.Low oxygen levels threaten the lives of fish fry.The company has met this challenge head-on by marrying traditional fish-farming with expertise in IT.That was how state-of-the-art solar panels came to be installed on its farms in 2011. They power a system that monitors the seawater for levels of dissolved oxygen, its pH and its temperature.Mr Ong, the brain behind the system, had spent more than two decades in information technology before he quit to pursue his passion for fish-farming. He believes technology can help fish farmers to overcome an environment which has become increasingly challenging to the business.Sensors in the monitoring system which track the quality of water transmit the data to a cloud-like server, which Mr Ong can access in real time, without even physically being at the fish farm. The former managing director of a software company has also programmed a mobile application that is compatible with the system; using this, MFG's on-site fish farmers can also access the data in real time on their smartphones. The system can even send text messages to alert members of the MFG staff whenever there is a drop in dissolved oxygen. These alerts are timed at varying frequencies, depending on the severity of the situatio文件倉.If dissolved oxygen falls in the wee hours of the morning, the system can activate solar power-driven pumps and aerators to pump oxygen into the seawater automatically, thus relieving the stress on the fish and lowering their death rate.Mr Ong said MFG is working on using technology on other upcoming projects as well. One is a system to track the amount of feed given to the fish to minimise wastage; the other tracks the number of fish in each net cage.If successful, these innovations will be deployed on MFG's new 1 ha farm off the coast of Changi. Now being built, it will enable the company to double its production volume in the next three years when it is up and running.MFG also plans to raise the production capacity of its existing farms; the four farms in the Straits of Johor, which now take up 3 ha of sea space, aim to raise their output by a third to 800 tonnes a year by the end of next year.Besides expanding its farms, MFG is looking to widen the range of fish species it offers to the local market. Supermarkets that buy their stocks from MFG have indicated their demand for a greater variety, said Mr Ong.Three types of local fish are now farmed - the grey mullet, the milkfish and the seawater tilapia. With the opening of its Changi facility, MFG is working towards offering the rabbitfish, red snapper and silver snapper, in time for next year's Chinese New Year.MFG has grown its revenue and production by 20 per cent year on year in the last three years.Mr Ong, estimating that Singapore imports more than 90 per cent of its fish, sees "a good opportunity to service the local market".He is confident that MFG can corner a larger market share by ensuring that its fish meet Singaporeans' demand for safe, affordable and good-quality fish.Add "fresh" to that, for, with a turnaround time of only 12 hours from sea to shelf, MFG's supplies are probably fresher than imported fish.Within the next three to five years, MFG plans to enter the business of filleting and packaging fish for sale to overseas markets.Mr Ong said: "Our ambition is to be a global player, not just a local player. But we'll always give top priority to Singapore because it is where we have a strong customer base."存倉

EDITORIAL: Roads not taken in the modern metropolis
Source: The Philadelphia InquirerAug. 19--No doubt reports of the demise of car ownership in Philadelphia and other metropolitan areas are premature -- just ask any driver idling away a rush hour on the Schuylkill. But the gathering evidence that driving is being seen as something less than a required rite of youthful passage should be welcome in Philadelphia and other cities that offer so many ways to get around -- and in regions whose air quality can only benefit from a drop in the number of people behind the wheel.Driver licensing among 19-year-olds has fallen 20 percent over the last two decades, and nearly half of that decline took place in the last few years. So it's no wonder researchers are popping the hood on this trend and trying to understand it.A study released by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute this month showed that many young Americans say they can get around without a car. They even prefer taking mass transit, hopping on a bicycle, or walking. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has reported similar findings. For a walkable city that has experienced a downtown residential boom, the studies underscore the value of public and private initiatives to promote cycling and car-sharing services, keep Center City and nearby neighborhoods clean and safe, expand recreational access along the Delaware River and Schuylkill, and upgrade major public spaces, like City Hall's Dilworth Plaza.Certainly the prospects of the city's pl迷你倉價錢nned bike-sharing program look more promising as more city residents eschew driving. Its launch, expected in the fall of 2014, can't come too soon. Some 35 other cities already offer bikes for short-term rental, linking commuters with transit stops and tourists with historic and other sites. In the coming months, Mayor Nutter's aides should be seeking bids for the bike-sharing system. City capital dollars have been allocated, and there's every reason to expect that state and federal grants are part of the mix of funding needed to assure an ample fleet of bicycles and convenient docking stations around Center City and beyond.Work also needs to continue on the fledgling bike and pedestrian path along the Delaware to catch up with the Schuylkill River Trail, which is being extended southward. For all that, the transportation backbone of a city where it's possible to live without a car will remain SEPTA's extensive train, bus, and trolley network. The agency's operating budget and maintenance are facing an uncertain future, however, in the absence of a comprehensive solution to Pennsylvania's statewide transportation funding problem. Plans have been on the drawing board in Harrisburg for several years, so it's long past time for Gov. Corbett and Republican legislative leaders to map out a plan to pay for roads and transit.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Philadelphia Inquirer Visit The Philadelphia Inquirer at .philly.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉庫

Farmers brew up wealth with native cup of tea
By He Na and Hu Meidong ( China Daily) Clockwise: The tea-themed open-air live show Impression Dahongpao has boosted Wuyishan's tea industry. Women are picking tea leaves in Xiamei village. Staff members of a tea company perform at a tea ceremony. Photos by Zou Hong / China Daily Local economy benefits from boom in demand for a taste of Dahongpao, report He Na and Hu Meidong in Wuyishan, Fujian province Peng Longfu, 72, never imagined that he would own a five-story house and that each member of his seven-strong family would have their own bedroom. Nor did he ever dream of owning two sedans costing more than 300,000 yuan ($49,000) each.A few hundred meters from Peng's home, his daughter-in-law has been busy hiring workers to build another five-story house. While memories of hard times remain vivid, many of Peng's fellow villagers, tea farmers in Tianxin village close to the north entrance of Wuyi Mountain National Nature Reserve, are still attempting to adjust to the dramatic rise in wealth that has come in just a few years.Their cramped, shabby bungalows have been replaced by four- and five-story houses and, rather than carts or tricycles, Mercedes-Benz and BMWs are parked in the shade of trees. The villagers attribute the change in fortune to the sudden popularity of Dahongpao tea, which means "Big Red Robe" and is one of the most famous brands in China. With huge signs displaying the characters for Dahongpao hanging outside almost every building, the village resembles a tea market rather than a residential community. The importance of the local brand is reflected in the names of the companies, which are often based on poems dedicated to Dahongpao tea. While the signs vary in size, color and font, they all have one thing in common; every one contains the word Zhengyan, which signifies that the village tea plantation is located in the key growing area of the Wuyi Mountain National Nature Reserve. The limited yield means tea grown in Tianxin village is very expensive. The wholesale price of this year's newly blended Dahongpao is at least 1,600 yuan per kilogram unpackaged. That price will more than double once the tea has been packaged by one of the large local businesses, with each bag bearing the company's logo."In 2007, our family had debts of more than 100,000 yuan. However, just six years later, the family's annual net income is more than 600,000 yuan. Our plantation is just two hectares, but families with larger plots of land can make much more money," said Yin Qi'an, a local producer. The Yin family's workshop opened in 1993. "It's called a tea plant, but it's really just a family workshop and we only hire outside workers in the busy seasons, when the leaves are being picked or blended," he said."Thanks to the recent rise in demand for Dahongpao tea and my father-in-law's excellent blending skills, our tea always sells out every year, even before the leaves are picked," added Yin.Peng's 20-year-old granddaughter is majoring in management at a college in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, and the elderly grower hopes she will return to the village after graduation to help him develop their brand and expand the family business."Combining her modern management methods with my tea blending skills is not just a dream," Peng said.Growing market Dahongpao tea makes high demands on the environment and mainly grows in Wuyi Mountain, according to Huang Xiangeng, director of the Wuyishan Shengdong Tea Culture Institute.Wuyi Mountain is known for its danxia landform, a geological term describing a continental red bed landform with many escarpments. The multi-hued land is full of minerals and features high mountains and deep valleys and a good covering of countless varieties of plants. In addition to the geology, abundant water vapor and moderate sunshine are major factors in producing the unique taste of Dahongpao, Huang Xiangeng said. The blending process, the procedure for making Dahongpao tea, is complicated and each of the separate 18 steps is crucial to the taste.Only experienced blenders with more than five or six years experience ever have the opportunity to practice these skills because the yield of Dahongpao is comparatively low."We have many diligent tea farmers, but working hard is just one of the requirements for making good tea; a good understanding of the tea-making method and tea culture plays a much more important role. And there are still very few people who meet all the requirements," said Huang.Demand for Dahongpao was low before 2010, when the price was between 600 to 1,000 yuan per kg. Even tea from Tianxin village only cost around 2,000 yuan per kg."To guarantee the quality of the tea, we used organic fertilizers and weeding machines instead of pesticides, which greatly increased the cost. So, despite the family's hard work over the course of the year, the income was very low. Many young people went away to work because the income was so low," said Huang Xianyi, a villager of Tianxin. However, at the beginning of 2010, money began to flow into the Dahongpao tea industry and Impression Dahongpao was launched. The show was China's first tea-themed open-air live performance. It combined tea culture with visual highlights and was the brainchild of cinematic maestro Zhang Yimou, director of Red Sorghum and Raise the Red Lantern. The market reaction was swift and the price of Dahongpao more than tripled. Not only have the tea farmers benefited from the boom in demand for Dahongpao, the local economy has also flourished.Wuyishan city is home to some 9,300 hectares of tea plantations, of which 8,000 hectares are grown from cuttings from six "mother" trees, according to the local tea bureau. In 2012, the yield of Dahongpao tea reached 6,200 metric tons, with an market value of 1.55 billion yuan. With more than 1,800 registered tea companies in the area, approximately 80,000 people are employed in tea-related jobs. That's boosted mini storagehe employment prospects of the large, rural labor force, but also promoted the development of related industries, such as packaging, logistics and tertiary industries, particularly services. The per capita net income of tea farmers in Wuyishan city reached 2,486 yuan in 2012, an increase of 78 percent from 2009, according to the local tea bureau. That saw the city's tax income soar to 51.19 million yuan, a jump of almost 110 percent jump from 2009.The city of tea Wuyishan can be regarded as a large tea-themed tourist park. The shops sport different decorations, but every one contains a large wooden table, complete with a teapot and a set of cups ready for brewing the beverage.Hailed as the "King of Chinese Tea", Dahongpao has been grown for centuries on the rugged Wuyi Mountain and was offered as a tribute or gift to the imperial courts in ancient times.According to Ye Qitong, a well-known tea expert and master blender, many fascinating stories about Dahongpao add to the charm of this prestigious tea."One popular legend has it that during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), a young scholar on his way to the imperial civil examinations was laid low by abdominal pain and fainted in front of a temple on Wuyi Mountain. A monk treated him with tea grown on the mountainside," explained Ye.Cured by the tea, the scholar continued his journey and took first place in the exam.Returning to the mountain as a high-ranking official, he expressed his gratitude by covering the tea tree with his new, flamboyant red court robe, and since then the tea has been called Dahongpao, explained Ye.Another anecdote that highlights the value of Dahongpao occurred in 1972, when then-US president Richard Nixon made his historic visit to China.During the visit, Nixon was presented with 200 grams of Dahongpao tea by Chairman Mao Zedong. However, the amount was so small that Nixon thought the gift trivial.Sensing Nixon's doubt, Zhou Enlai, China's premier at the time, explained that the total annual yield of the six mother trees, which have survived for hundreds of years, was a mere 400 grams and joked that the chairman had already given him "half of the country".Retaining its status as a premium gift, the tea boasts a high market price. In 2002, 20 grams sold for a record 180,000 yuan at an auction in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.Healthy development The promising market for Dahongpao in recent years has resulted in tea companies springing up all over the city."Competition is the engine that has driven the industry to upgrade technologically and pursue a higher level of quality. However, disorderly competition could ruin the industry, especially in terms of the environmental toll," said Huang Shenghui, chairman of the Ruiquan Tea Co."The high quality of Wuyi rock cliff tea mainly lies in the well-preserved natural environment and ecological chain," he said. The Ruiquan brand is more than 300 years old. Although the company owns more than 67 hectares of tea plantations, the annual yield is restricted to just 20,000 kg to ensure the quality remains as high as possible. Ruiquan is one of the very few tea companies in Wuyishan that conducts business overseas, with 20 percent of its products exported."Tea plantations make high demands on a place. It needs the right environment and the correct amount of sunshine, which means not every place is suitable to be a tea plantation. Blind expansion will destroy the ecological balance and that could deal a devastating blow to the local industry." Huang's comments were echoed by Yu Daihua, president of Jiulongpao Tea Co, one of Wuyishan's top 10 tea businesses."Wuyi Mountain is the best advertisement for the city's tea industry and to protect our own interests, we need to safeguard our best asset," said Yu, referring to the fact that unrestricted competition has caused confusion in the market for Dahongpao tea, because the high-quality leaves are now being mixed with inferior teas."The best way to solve the problem is to build consumer confidence by only using the best brands," Yu said.He stressed that a common misunderstanding should be cleared up; many consumers believe that unless tea comes from one of the six mother trees, it is not real Dahongpao. Yu emphasized that this is simply untrue: "Currently most Dahongpao tea trees are vegetative-propagated, which means they have been grown from cuttings from the mother trees. They maintain the high quality associated with the mother trees and we can honestly say that the tea we're producing now is even better than before." Zhang Guangcheng, manager of Lyuzhou Tea Co, said the popularity of Wuyi Mountain tea has prompted other companies and farmers in the areas surrounding Wuyishan and even further afield to cite Wuyi Mountain as their point of origin. That has greatly harmed the development of Wuyishan's tea industry, he said. He urged the government to take measures to ensure that the genuine brands are protected.According to Huang Shoushan, director of the Wuyishan Xianming Tea Plant: "Food safety has attracted increased attention in recent years, as a result of several scandals, so safety should always be our top priority. Although organic fertilizers greatly increase costs, history shows that consumers are always happy to pay for healthy products." He called on the government to strengthen measures to crack down on counterfeit products and the substitution of high-quality goods with inferior items. He also suggested that the Wuyishan government should learn from the measures taken by the Guangdong No 1 Tea Trade Market, which demands valid certificates of product inspection as an entry qualification for traders. To guarantee the validity of the certificate, the market conducts random inspections of the goods to ensure that they are of the highest quality and that consumers are not cheated.Sun Li contributed to this story.Contact the writers through hena@chinadaily.com.cn.self storage

Midway-Message From the Gyre (.midwayfilm.com)。
