Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteJuly 20--A longtime proponent of the Mon-Fayette Expressway has given up hope that it will ever be built into Pittsburgh, offering an alternative that would put high-occupancy vehicles on the Martin Luther King Jr.mini storage East Busway instead.Joseph Kirk, executive director of the Mon Valley Progress Council, has lobbied for years in favor of the expressway, which at present runs for about 60 miles from Interstate 68 in West Virginia to Route 51 in Jefferson Hills.Plans, long stuck on the drawing board, call for a two-pronged northern extension, with one leg connecting to the Parkway East in Monroeville and the other going into Pittsburgh at Oakland. Most observers, including state Transportation Secretary Barry Schoch, have essentially written off the Pittsburgh leg as too problematic and expensive. And now, Mr. Kirk, perhaps the most outspoken supporter of the expressway, has joined them.Even a $2.5 billion transportation funding bill that passed the state Senate but died in the House last month would not have had sufficient money to finance the expressway into Pittsburgh, he said.PG graphic: New direction for Mon-Fay?(Click image for larger version)Instead, he has proposed completing the 13-mile leg to Monroeville; extending the East Busway by 2.8 miles so that it connects with the expressway in East Pittsburgh; building a park-n-ride lot where the expressway connects with the parkway in Monroeville; and allowing HOV traffic on the busway. That would give drivers three options at Monroeville: Sit in Parkway East traffic; park and take a bus into Pittsburgh on the expressway and busway; or use the HOV, which likely would be tolled, he said. While acknowledging that the plan would face significant obstacles, Mr. Kirk said it would be less costly and less controversial than building the expressway into Pittsburgh and would achieve the same goals: relieving congestion on the Parkway East and opening up Mon Valley brownfield sites for commercial and industrial development."Because the expressway alternative involves a number of multimself storagedal components it would likely attract funding from a number of sources including state and federal multimodal funding," he said. "These funding sources could even be used in combination with a public-private partnership to help make the project a reality."Mr. Kirk has yet to circulate his idea much, aside from his organization's board of directors. "I want to float the idea and just get some initial feedback," he said.Amie Downs, spokeswoman for Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, said Mr. Fitzgerald had not heard about Mr. Kirk's proposal until a reporter inquired, and said he "thinks that there would be a lot of hurdles to it."Port Authority, which owns the busway, "would welcome an opportunity to sit down and discuss the idea and look at it more carefully," spokesman Jim Ritchie said. "There are some obstacles to using the busway in that manner."The busway was built with federal funds and designed for higher-speed transit bus operations, he said. "By putting more nontransit vehicles on the busway, it's likely that public transit trips would take longer and the benefit offered by the busway would be adversely affected." Federal approval would be needed before such a change could be made.Another issue is safety: Buses currently stop at several stations along the busway, speed limits are lower on the approaches to stations and there are pedestrian crossings, he noted.Mr. Kirk said his plan could help build support for a transportation funding bill in the Legislature when it revisits the issue in the fall."It's time to stop fighting over an expressway highway-only design that likely will never be built and work together on an expressway alternative that is both feasible and provides real promise for our entire region," he said.Jon Schmitz: jschmitz@post-gazette.com or 412-263-1868.

Indicted lawmaker could face more counts
Source: The Columbus Dispatch, OhioJuly 20--State Rep.迷你倉 Peter Beck's alleged role in a southwestern Ohio financial deal gone sour has him facing 16 felony charges related to securities fraud -- and that maximum 102-year prison sentence may be just the beginning.Attorney General Mike DeWine expects more charges will be filed.A Hamilton County grand jury issued the indictments yesterday against the Mason Republican in relation to his role as chief financial officer for Christopher Technologies, a startup software company also known as CTech. DeWine said Beck misrepresented the value of securities in the company and failed to disclose to investors the condition of the company, though he knew it was insolvent.DeWine said that Beck, 60, also lied to investors about receiving compensation from CTech. Those investors lost about $200,000 in the deal.Speaker William G. Batchelder, R-Medina, said Beck has served honorably but called for him to resign his seat immediately."While there is always a presumption of innocence until proven otherwise, it is my belief that these very serious allegations could cause a distraction to the good work of the (House)," Batchelder said in a written statement. "Therefore, I believe this action would be in the best interest of not only the residents of the 54th House District and the members of the Ohio House of Representatives, but also Rep. Beck and his family."Ohio GOP Chairman Matt Borges agreed that Beck should step down.DeWine is joining Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters to prosecute the case, which includes charges of misrepresenting the sale of securities, unlicensed sale of securities and making false statements. John Fussner of Mason, the president of Christopher Technologies, also was indicted on seven felony counts."Theft is theft whether it is a simple theft of merchandise from a store or the sophisticated scheme perpetrated by Beck and Fussner," Deters said. "All thieves should be held accountable."The indictments make Beck the third state legislator in the past 13 months to face felony charges.Beck's attorney, Konrad Kircher of Mason, said this week that his client will mount a "vigorous defense.""The charges are unsupported," he said in a statement. "Mr. Beck is being blamed for the errors or wrongdoing of others."Kircher, who did not return a call for additional comment yesterday, said the primary person involved in the investments is dead, and Fussner is bankrupt. "Consequently, law enforcement, based on inaccurate information provided by investors, has cast a broad net to attempt to remedy the unfortunate business losses of the investors."Beck did hours of uncompensated work and also is a victim of the scheme, Kircher said.Kircher has downplayed Beck's role with CTech, bu文件倉 Deters said, "Based on these charges, I would question his (Beck's) veracity." DeWine added: "Obviously a grand jury felt it was more than just being an accountant."A lawsuit filed in Hamilton County by more than a dozen investors argues that money given at the request of Beck and others was to be used for business investments, but instead it was used for personal benefit, given to a Cincinnati-area church and donated to Beck's political campaign. Most of the money was invested with TML Consulting, a firm run by the late Thomas Lysaght, who was supposed to invest the money in a small portfolio of companies, including CTech.According to the lawsuit, hundreds of thousands of dollars were instead given to a Cincinnati-area church, Ark by the River Fellowship Ministry, where Lysaght's widow, Janet Combs, is the pastor. Beck, according to the lawsuit, had done accounting work for the church. There also were "significant" cash withdrawals, the lawsuit said, and TML donated $15,700 to Beck's campaign. Some plaintiffs invested $200,000 directly into CTech, and they have argued that Beck solicited some investments. Beck has denied the allegations and counter-sued, accusing investors of defaming him.Beck represents the 54th District in Butler and Warren counties. He is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, which examines tax issues, and he is a member of the powerful House Finance Committee, which deals with state budgets. Batchelder offered assurance that work of Ways and Means will continue uninterrupted. When asked about other aspects of the investment scheme, such as the money donated to Beck's campaign or money given to the church, DeWine stressed that the investigation is not over. The charges filed yesterday, he said, were those that needed to be filed now because of the statute of limitations. The state Division of Securities got its first complaint about the matter in February 2011."Certainly those are being looked at," DeWine said of the church and campaign giving. "There are still other parts of the case, and at some point in the future it would be our intention to bring them to the grand jury."Democrats wanted Republican leaders to call on Beck to step down. "These charges against Rep. Beck do more than taint just him, they harm the public's trust in all of state government," said Rep. Chris Redfern of Port Clinton, the Ohio Democratic chairman.Gov. John Kasich is going to stay out of the mix."These matters are for legislative caucuses to address," said spokesman Rob Nichols.Dispatch Reporter Joe Vardon contributed to this story.@phrontpageCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Columbus Dispatch (Columbus, Ohio) Visit The Columbus Dispatch (Columbus, Ohio) at www.dispatch.com Distributed by MCT Information Services存倉

Erny back in the saddle coaching basketball
Source: The Daily News, Jacksonville, N.新蒲崗迷你倉C.July 19--Doug Erny was his normal personable self. The former Lejeune High basketball coach was smiling, laughing and having a good time with some of his coaching counterparts Thursday as coaches and players all met at the Jacksonville Commons Recreation Center for the start of the East Coast Invitational team camp.It was as if Erny had never taken a year off from coaching high school basketball.Still, one thing was noticeably different.Instead of sporting Lejeune's maroon-and-gold attire, the 48-year-old Erny was wearing a Jacksonville High T-shirt, a sign that he was indeed the Cardinals' new coach.Erny was hired as Jacksonville's coach last month after he took one year off from coaching after a 23-year tenure at Lejeune. And while Erny, a 1983 Jacksonville graduate, is glad to be back on the bench, he said he was a bit rusty getting back into coaching."I guess I was a little bit rusty because the first night (of summer workouts) I forgot to take a whistle to practice," Erny quipped. "But basketball hadn't changed in a year. You still got to get the kids to buy into what you're trying to do and you got to get it to where they know you have their back. I think that's what we are working on."But after the first sound of a basketball dribbling off the court, Erny was back in business. He said it didn't feel different coaching a team inside Jacksonville's Bird Cage vs. coaching aboard Camp Lejeune. At Lejeune, Erny was 406-195 and led the Devilpups to NCHSAA 1-A East Regional trips in 1993, 1994, 2002 and 2006."To me, you're in a gym with a goal and you're still trying to get your team to do their best," Erny said. "It doesn't matter if your practice is in the Bird Cage or in the Dean Dome, practice is practice. You want to make it up-tempo for these kids, but you want to make it fun, especially in the summer."Erny said that prior to the ECI that his team has practiced eight times, attended a two-day camp at East Carolina University and played in a few summer league games. He hopes to use the summer to help the players bond with the coaching staff, which includes James Jordan, who coached the Cardinals last year on an interim base."I think we have developed a good rapport with the kids who have been in the gym," Erny said. "All the kmini storageds seem to get along and coach Jordan has been very instrumental in bridging the gap between them and us since we are all new."The players seem to like the easy-going Erny."It's fun, but it's hard," senior guard Chris Smith said. "He's like, 'If you don't work hard, you won't be on this team.' I took it serious. He is straightforward."Smith was second on the team last year in scoring, averaging 10.7 points per game for the Cardinals, who finished 10-16 overall, 5-9 in the Coastal 3-A Conference and lost at Rocky Mount in the first round of the NCHSAA playoffs.Winning more games is the ultimate goal for Erny and the Cardinals. However, he wants Jacksonville to accomplish that while understanding his system."I think the biggest adjustment is we play man-to-man defense and they've played a lot of zone and seen a lot of zone," Erny said. "They are having a real hard time grasping the team concept of defense, help defense and being in the passing lanes."We've just put in a couple of traps and full-court things. I'm just trying to get them on the mentality that they need to play hard every minute."That includes playing as a team on both ends of the court, junior center Billy Bodette said."He really emphasizes team ball and I think that's going to be good for us," Bodette said of Erny. "We just need to play as a team."But more importantly, Erny wants a solid effort. Erny's Lejeune teams weren't always the most athletic, but his teams were rarely outworked on the court."I want to see them play hard from start to finish, whether things are going good or going bad," Erny said. "I want them to get after it, get on the floor after loose balls and I want to see our offense go a little bit more than one pass."The effort has been great and the kids have been really working hard trying to get my system down. We are a little bit behind, defensively, from where I'd like to be, but the effort has been there."I know we've thrown a lot of stuff at them and for some of them, they've had three different coaches the last three years. Obviously their heads are swimming a little bit, but they are doing a good job trying to do it."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Daily News (Jacksonville, N.C.) Judge Steven Rhodes selected to oversee Detroit bankruptcy
Source: Detroit Free PressJuly 19--It's official.迷你倉價錢U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes, one of Detroit's most experienced judges known for running a strict courtroom, has been picked to oversee the Detroit's historic bankruptcy case, the biggest such filing in the nation's history involving more than $18 billion in debts that officials say piled up over 60 years. And just as legal experts had predicted, Detroit's financial fate will rest in the hands of a hometown judge, who has more than just legal skills. Outside the courtroom, the 73-year-old Rhodes plays rhythm guitar in a classic rock house band called The Indubitable Equivalents, according to the band's website. The group says it's the band of the American Bankruptcy Institute ("ABI"), a trade association for bankruptcy professionals, and that Rhodes picked up his guitar skills from his father at the age of 15, later serenading his wife with tunes such "Sound of Silence" and "Eve of Destruction."The latter song is fitting for the historic municipal bankruptcy case that Rhodes would inherit decades later.Rhodes, who has been a bankruptcy judge in the Eastern District of Michigan since 1985, also has ties to the region, unlike those who oversaw the bankruptcy cases of Detroit's automotive giants General Motors and Chrysler. Their bankruptcy cases were filed in New York.Detroit's will stay here, where, as legal experts explained, all of its assets are.-- PDF: Read the order appointing RhodesRhodes is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, where he taught from 1992-2002, and is a former associate editor of the Michigan Law Review and American Bankruptcy Law Journal. Before becoming a bankruptcy judge in the Eastern District of M迷你倉庫chigan, he served on the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel (BAP) of the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He also formerly served as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge John Feikens, who oversaw Detroit's troubled water department. Last year, he co-authored The Ponzi Book: A Legal Resource for Unraveling Ponzi Schemes. Some local bankruptcy attorneys, who declined to be named because they practice before Rhodes, describe his demeanor as unpleasant and difficult. Some of that toughness was demonstrated in a 2005 head-to-head debate, in which Rhodes took on noted UCLA law professor Lynn LoPucki about various controversial aspects of bankruptcy law.LoPucki, a nationally recognized bankruptcy law specialist, had written a book called, "Courting Failure: How Competition for Big Cases Is Corrupting the Bankruptcy Courts."During the debate, Rhodes attacked LoPucki's theories and took issue with the book."The bottom line is that this book is an inflammatory attack on the judges in New York and Delaware," Rhodes told LoPucki at the time.In recent years, Rhodes has handled bankruptcy cases such as Awrey Bakeries, Simplified Employment Services and Collins & Aikman, a complex case that involved large debts resulting from an aggressive acquisition strategy.Rhodes was handpicked to oversee Detroit's bankruptcy case by Alice Batchelder, chief judge of the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, a conservative who was appointed to the federal bench by former President Ronald Reagan, and to the appeals court by President George H. WhatsApp新用戶收年費 居民:聊天工具多或轉會

Huawei ‘fully backs UK security review’
Telecom equipment giant ‘open to cooperation to boost cybersecurity’ By Zhang Chunyan in London and Shen Jingting in Beijing China’s telecoms and computer network giant Huawei Technologies Co Ltd supports the British government review of its security center in England, the company said on Friday.mini storage “Huawei shares the same goal as the UK government and the Intelligence and Security Committee in raising the standards of cybersecurity in the UK and ensuring that network technology benefits UK consumers,” Huawei said in a statement. “Huawei is open to new ideas and ways of working to improve cybersecurity,” it added. The company made the statement after the British government confirmed on Thursday it is to review Huawei’s involvement in a cybersecurity center known as the Cell in Banbury, Oxfordshire. The review will be conducted by Prime Minister David Cameron’s National Security Adviser Kim Darroch, who is due to report back later this year. Huawei, based in Shenzhen of South China’s Guangdong province, signed a multi-billion pound deal in 2005 to supply BT Group Plc, Britain’s largest telecoms operator, as part of upgrades to a network. The Chinese company launched a security center in 2010 to test its new hardware and software for security risks before being linked to Britain’s critical infrastructure. But in June, the British parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee issued a critical report about the center, which was set up to examine the physical equipment and software used by Huawei and assure that it is not vulnerable to cyberattack, in which it urged the government to reviewself storagesecurity at the base.Huawei stressed the fact that the British government responded to the report, saying: “Our work with Huawei and their UK customers gives us confidence that the networks in the UK that use Huawei equipment are operated to a high standard of security and integrity.” Yao Shujie, head of the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Nottingham, told China Daily: “For Huawei, which is internationalizing, similar reviews or research in some foreign countries are inevitable. But with its ambitions for the future, Huawei has an eye on the longer term.” Huawei announced last September that it would invest and create more jobs in the UK as part of its overall expansion plan in Europe. Huawei employs 800 people in the UK and plans to increase that to 1,500 over the next five years as part of a 1.3 billion pound ($1.98 billion) investment and procurement program in Britain. “Huawei has been active in the UK. As long as the British review confirms Huawei’s security and strength, it will promote the company’s image,” Yao added. In October 2012, the United States House of Representatives Committee on Intelligence urged American firms to stop doing business with Huawei and ZTE Corp, warning that China could use equipment to spy on certain communications and threaten vital systems. PennLive reader poll shows strong backing of Internet sales tax to even retail playing field
Source: The Patriot-News, Harrisburg, Pa.迷你倉July 19--Main Street businesses seem to be carrying the day. The interests of all those brick-and-mortar locations that sell goods and services the old fashioned way -- face-to-face and subject to state sales tax -- are winning people over in our poll.By nearly a 3-to-1 margin in an unofficial PennLive poll, readers are supporting the Alliance for Main Street Fairness's call for "e-fairness" sales tax legislation. With more than 600 votes cast since yesterday, 70 percent of poll participants voted yes in answer to the poll question: "Are you willing to pay more Internet sales taxes if it means more growth and jobs?"Their reason, as defined by the "yes" response in the poll: "Not paying taxes on Internet purchases is unfair to brick and mortar businesses."Nearly 27 percent voted "No. Raising taxes has never created jobs. I don't buy it." The remainder voted that they needed to hear more on the issue before making up their mind. The results appear to buoy the position of the Alliance for Main Street Fairness. And the results come on the heels of a new study, released yesterday, that was commissioned by the group, which has a chapter in Pennsylvania.Authored by economist Art Laffer and Donna Arduin, the study shows that closing the online sales tax loophole has a myriad of benefits, including the potential to lower overall tax rates and jump-start economic growth.Laffer's st文件倉dy suggests that passing e-fairness legislation like the Marketplace Fairness Act would create a tax system with fewer loopholes, a larger base and lower rates for all taxpayers.Laffer concludes that this would lead to an increase in GDP of $563.2 billion and over 1.5 million jobs nationally -- and $15.1 billion and 43,803 jobs in Pennsylvania -- all over the next 10 years. In May, the Marketplace Fairness Act received a bipartisan vote in the U.S. Senate, and similar legislation is already pending in the House of Representatives with over 60 bipartisan cosponsors. And Pennsylvanians are already supposed to be keeping track of their Internet purchases and paying the state sales tax when none is charged. But good luck with that. Now, Laffer's latest findings seem to support the efforts of a growing coalition of small business owners, governors and free market conservatives across the country who are urging the U.S. House of Representatives to act and to pass the Marketplace Fairness Act.So what do you think? Are you willing to pay more Internet sales taxes if it leads to improved economic growth and more jobs, both in Pennsylvania and in the country was a whole? There is still time to vote in our PennLive poll and to share your views in the comments.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pa.)
