Source: Cape Cod Times, Hyannis, Mass.迷你倉庫Aug. 01--As we waited for our lunch at Beth's Bakery & Cafe, I read the takeout brochure and learned the building was built in 1847 as a chapel, spent about 50 years as a hardware store and was even used briefly, in the 1940s, as a USO hall. The restaurant still exudes that sense of a long past, with antique dolls and furniture tucked into every nook and cranny, including the shelf that cuts across the eatery's peaked ceiling over the front door. The feeling is of a big, airy space made cozy with antiques and the huge porch out front. There are also touches of the Cape's oldest town: free maps and brochures of local attractions, as well as photographs for sale. You order at the counter and receive a number to put on the table so the waitress can find you with the food. It was not much of a challenge since it was quiet when we dropped in for a late lunch, but a necessity, our waitress said, if you want to get your meal during busy times.Beth's Bakery & Cafe was formerly Beth's Special Teas Bakery & Cafe, and tea is still a strong point. I had a delicious iced raspberry blend, made with leaf tea and tasting of fresh raspberries. My friend chose a cup of hot tea, brewed to a rich amber color and fragrant with steam. Good tea, well-made like this, is an occasion -- a reminder of just how bland a generic, dunked bag can be.The menu is small, but adequate, three or four soups and twice that many sandwiches written on a white board, a daily quiche and panini, as well as a couple of salads, including the nice quaint choice of a stuffed tomato. We each decided to have the half-sandwich and cup of soup, which came with a small bag of chips for $7.95 the day we were there, although the online menu lists the combo at $8.99.My friend ordered haddock chowder with a crab salad sandwich (an additional $1, but well ,worth i儲存.) The chowder was thin in consistency, but rich and aromatic, filled with bite-size pieces of fish and potatoes. He especially enjoyed the crab salad, which had soft, feathery crabmeat and celery in a salad just moistened with mayonnaise so the flavor of the dressing didn't overwhelm the delicate crab. For soup, I chose the gazpacho. The cold tomato soup with bits of crispy cucumber, pepper and onion had a little more zip than I expected, but it was well balanced so it tasted refreshing and full-bodied, not overly spicy. My half-sandwich of egg salad came on bread sliced from loaves the folks at Beth's recently started baking there. It was good but mild, not very different from an egg salad sandwich you would make at home. There is no menu for the desserts because they are there, arranged in glass cases, all yours for the looking at -- from muffins and scones to little peanut butter and Oreo confections that looked like heaven but were probably cupcakes. We were sharing, and settled on an individual-sized carrot cake. It looked great, but was a bit disappointing because the cake was dry and the frosting, while delicous, was too sweet and light for carrot cake. Traditional cream cheese frosting would have offered that balance of sweet and tart, which complements the not-so-sweet, dense carrot cake.We had coffee with dessert: my friend's espresso was fine but my cappucino had way too much milk in the espresso-milk blend. When I asked about adding a shot of espresso, our server said it could not be done because that was the way "the machine makes it."I would lunch at Beth's again, but I'd try something else from the dessert case (check it out on the website) and stick with tea.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, Mass.)
