Source: San Antonio Express-NewsSept. 07--News of British Airways' commitment to Austin seemed to drop out of the blue last week. The airline announced Tuesday that it'll offer nonstop service between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and London's Heathrow Airport beginning in March.OK.South By Southwest is amazing. Where else can you find Jack White performing an acoustic set on the street? But ...And I guess Europeans love Formula One racing in a way most Americans could never understand, and Austin does have the Circuit of the Americas race. But ...The case for Austin's first direct international flight, apart from destinations in Mexico, isn't easily discernible to the naked eye.Airport spokesman Jim Halbrook said more than 90 passengers travel between Austin and London each way per day. However, a consultant's survey for the city of San Antonio's Aviation Department put the number at 59, making Austin the 25th-biggest U.S. market for travel to and from London. (San Antonio ranks 38th, with a scant 31 passengers going each way every day.)Sure, the fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner made the route more feasible for British Airways. But the real reason the airline is starting the service is that Austin's business leaders wanted it to happen and more than likely made it worth British Airways' while. It certainly wasn't taxpayer-subsidized giveaways. Austin officials swore to the Austin American-Statesman that there weren't any, at least not beyond the standard waiver of landing and facility fees for new routes.A British Airways vice president told the newspaper that the company recognized "the growing importance of Austin, internationally and globally, as not just a leisure destination but also as a hub for business within North America."The speculation in San Antonio is that business executives, herded by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, either ponied up money to help the airline establish itself in the Capital City or pledged to take up enough seats to London to make the investment work for British Airways. Or maybe they did both. (My call to Austin's chamber went unanswered.)That had to be galling to airport officials here. For the first time, they're asking major employers -- through chambers of commerce -- to financially contribute to the effort to snag a new direct route at San Antonio International Airport. The aim is to convince New York-based JetBlue Airways to launch nonstop S.A.-to-Boston service. But as of Thursday, they appeared to be coming up short. In a brief white paper I obtained, officials said Boston is the top destination for San Antonio business travelers that isn't served by a direct flight. Locally based bi自存倉medical companies -- a number of them eager to tap into the Boston area's health care expertise and venture capital -- are the most obvious potential beneficiaries of nonstop service.Apart from corporate letters of encouragement and "marketing and/or advertising support" for JetBlue, the paper makes a pitch for commitments "of a percentage of the company's annual corporate travel to JetBlue" and "of financial support toward matching the $400,000 contribution of the San Antonio International Airport."Barbara Prossen, the airport's director of marketing and community relations, acknowledged the recruitment effort in an interview. She noted the fierce competition for direct flights -- a must-have for sizable companies -- and said: "We're just copying what other communities are doing."When the private sector puts money on the table, Prossen said, that's "a demonstration that the community supports this airline."Airport officials had set Friday as the deadline for commitments of support. The day before, I called Richard Perez, president of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, one of the chambers asked to solicit its members, to find out how the fundraising was going. Not good.By that point, Perez said, none of the chamber's member companies had promised to write a check."We're working it really hard," he said. "We're hoping we can supplement what's on the table from the airport and other sources." Explaining the poor showing so far, he said businesses here just aren't accustomed to that kind of ask. "It's all new -- I don't know that we've had the private sector asked to contribute before."The city, on the other hand, has pitched in plenty, though with less than stellar results. We reported in June that 14 airlines had received $3.14 million in grants to market 30 new direct flights since 2005. Thanks largely to the Great Recession and its drag on air travel, 18 of those flights went away.Still, the airport has had a lot of success winning nonstop flights to destinations in Mexico, a boost to an untold number of San Antonio firms. It remains to be seen, of course, how the airport will fare with JetBlue and service to Boston. But if it's true that prized routes rarely come without inducements -- and that the competition between cities is escalating and getting costlier -- let's hope San Antonio execs eventually decide to emulate their Austin counterparts.Greg Jefferson is business editor of the San Antonio Express-News.

Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteSept. 07--Sorry, governor, but your Steelers game is about to be interrupted by more UPMC ads.Just as Pittsburgh's No. 1 health system unveiled two new anti-Highmark TV ads -- originally airing Thursday, and set to broadcast this weekend and during Sunday's season opener -- a task force created by Gov. Tom Corbett rapped Highmark and UPMC for a "lack of professionalism and judgment" regarding their ongoing TV and radio advertising campaigns. The dueling health titans appear to be trying to scare customers, according to a letter sent to the CEOs of both companies by two top state officials. The letter was issued (and released publicly) by state Insurance Commissioner Michael Consedine and state Secretary of Health Michael Wolf, addressed to Highmark CEO William Winkenwerder Jr. and UPMC CEO Jeffrey Romoff, as well as legal officials from Highmark and UPMC.Officials from the Insurance Department and the Health Department make up Mr. Corbett's Interagency Consumer Protection Task Force, created last month to deal with consumer confusion in the health care realm, and particularly the confusion arising from the protracted public relations battle between Pittsburgh's largest insurer and its largest hospital network."The advertisements appear to be intended to drive consumers to choose their health insurance and health provider based on fear," the letter says, urging the companies to "refocus on their primary mission to serve" their patients and subscribers. The letter, dated Thursday, also said the task force has discussed the ad campaigns with both organizations in the past two weeks, and asked Highmark and UPMC to again clarify how the two organizations will cooperate when it comes to access for Medicare and Medicare Advantage plan customers.Paul Wood, UPMC spokesman, said UPMC would reissue a joint statement or advertisement with Highmark regarding Medicare access, but that Highmark has "balked a存倉 doing so."He also said UPMC would be "more than pleased to work with the task force to determine what ads they feel might be misleading, or inaccurate, and negative."In a statement, Highmark said that "Highmark's communications in the media have been positive. They focus on the need for the parties to work together to establish a more constructive relationship and on affordable access to care."Highmark also said that "We believe that UPMC should make a firm, long-term commitment to Highmark's Medicare Advantage members by renewing its facility contracts annually through at least 2020, and assuring in-network access to their physicians during the same period."UPMC is adding two new Highmark-related ads to its growing rotation, one addressing out-of-network rates ("you'll only pay those out-of-network rates if you stick with Highmark") and another about how easy it to switch away from Highmark and into a more UPMC-friendly health insurance policy.Highmark is not planning any ads for the Steelers game, according to a spokeswoman. The ad war intensified this summer after the state Insurance Department approved Highmark's takeover of the financially ailing West Penn Allegheny Health System, which triggered the launch of Highmark's new Allegheny Health Network. In August, UPMC sued Highmark in U.S. District Court, alleging false advertising. The contract between Highmark and UPMC expires at the end of 2014, meaning if the two don't arrive at a new contract before then, many Highmark customers won't have access to UPMC doctors and hospitals.Highmark says it wants a new, long-term contract, but UPMC says it doesn't, because it won't do business with a competitor -- which Highmark is, now that it runs its own hospital network.Bill Toland: btoland@post-gazette.com or 412-263-2625.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Visit the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at .post-gazette.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉

After several decisive victories, the Dutch were forced to leave Taiwan, and the island became Zheng’s last stronghold against the Qing, which had already seized most of the Chinese mainland.Zheng was a diehard loyalist to the Ming Dynasty, which made it impossible for him to return to the mainland. Unable to return to his homeland because of the continued strife, he died in 1662 in Taiwan. In the early years of the Republic of China period (1912-1949), Siming county was established with an area covering today’s Xiamen city and Kinmen county of Taiwan. In 1950, the Siming district was founded at the central part of Xiamen.A huge Zheng Chenggong statue has been erected on the Gulangyu Island to commemorate this national hero.
