mini storage

  • Power to the people Chinese-style

‘A desk is a dangerous place from which to watch the world. This phrase from novelist John Le Carre aptly summarizes the problem President Xi Jinping is trying to solve with his new “mass line” and bring Party and government officials closer to the people.Chinese officials, like their counterparts in other countries, must provide overall direction on issues, which often means working “behind the desk”. But relying on second- and third-hand reports on conditions “out there”, while sitting behind the desk, can be very dangerous, because the reports could be inaccurate, dishonest or lack key information. To address this contradiction and to effectively implement the mass line, the authorities have to take several measures.Officials have, in recent decades, carried out periodic inspections of government organizations and other facilities, and schools and villages in an attempt to ascertain the real conditions. But local officials have all too often been informed in advance to expect an inspection team, which enables them to make preparations to impress the visiting officials.I once taught in a college where, on learning that an inspection team was coming, the officials started special training sessions to instruct students to conceal the real conditions. I tried to stop this but could not.Human nature being what it is, in most cases surprise inspections, with no advance notice, may be needed to determine the real state of government facilities, schools and villages.Chinese officials could also consider some unusual steps that some governments and businesses in the West have taken to “move closer to the people”. Some senior managers of large department store chains, for example, spend an afternoon working as ordinary cashiers, thereby gaining a more accurate understanding of real customers’ experiences.Similarly, a Chinese official might want to spend regular time “on the front lines”, interacting as a regular worker with visitors to his/her ministry or department. The minister in charge of the welfare system in the 自存倉anadian province where I lived spent a month experiencing the conditions endured by the welfare recipients. He survived on the same small amount of money, lived in the same kind of shabby housing and ate the same cheap food that welfare recipients did, and thus gained firsthand knowledge of the real conditions of the people his ministry served.Perhaps a Chinese official responsible for assisting farmers who have migrated to a city in search of better income could spend some time living and working as a “migrant worker”.During the revolution, and for some time afterward, the Communist Party of China was composed mainly of workers and farmers, and therefore stood close to the people. Recruiting more ordinary workers and farmers as Party members is perhaps another key to bringing the Party and government closer to the people.Another way of bringing Party and government officials closer to the people is the Internet. Online sites like weibo have already enabled ordinary citizens to play an important role in reporting and curbing corruption and poor governance. Ordinary people have exposed corrupt officials, the improper use of government vehicles for private business, wastage of public money on lavish dinners and other violations on weibo.Such sharing of information on the Internet has become an important part of people’s supervision of governments. But much more can be done.Using the Internet to solicit public opinion is very important. Active and animated online discussions on issues selected by government (or the people) can take place even before precise questions are formulated. In fact, the collective wisdom of the people that emerges from such discussions can be incorporated into government policies. In the age of the Internet, China has the opportunity to use the latent powers of information and communications technology to enable wider participation in public discourses and decision-making, which can eventually help bring officials closer to the people. The author is a Canadian freelance writer living in China.

  • Kramden doubling its size, offering more programs

Source: The Herald-Sun, Durham, N.self storageC.July 28--DURHAM -- With all the work the Kramden Institute is doing in the community, it's no surprise that the nonprofit is having to double its space to keep up with its already hectic pace.Kramden, which provides computers to those in need, recently signed a lease for the suite next door and will soon double its space from 5,000 to 10,000 square feet."We're literally bursting at the seams," said Cari Delmariani, director of programs at Kramden. "We've had so many people volunteer that we've had to turn people away. This is a huge thing for us. We're even adding classrooms to do digital literacy classes for the community."With construction slated to begin this week, Delmariani said that it's best for people to track the progress via the Kramden Institute Facebook page, where pictures and updates will be posted."The construction will take at least a month. We won't have any open volunteer events until probably September," she said. "We've been planning for the summer so we have some machines on hand so the construction shouldn't affect our output."The output that Delmariani is referring to is the organization's goal of distributing 3,000 computers this year to those in need. She said that so far Kramden is about halfway there.Delmariani explained that the new space will allow for institute to spread out and break up into clearly defined storage and work spaces along with an area where computers are awarded to recipients. As volunteers hustled and bustled about during the most recent -- and last one until construction finishes -- Wednesday Work Night, others were giving suggestions on carpet samples and paint swatches for the new space. Some were leaning more toward some blues while others were in favor of the warmer yellows and oranges. The excitement about the impending expansion was obvious, even among the nonprofit's founder, Mark Dibner. What started out as a simple project with his son, Ned, in their basement to help children who didn't have access to a computer in their homes has blossomed into a venture that has had a tremendous impact on the community.Their flagship program, Kramden Tech Scholars, assists students in third through 12th grades with a working, home computer. Students are nominated by an educator and once a student is assigned to a computer, an appointment is scheduled to pick up the computer迷你倉"It's just one of those things that's taken on a life of its own," Dibner said. "We've had about 8,000 different people volunteer."Among the volunteers are stacks and pallets of computers waiting to be evaluated and refurbished for distribution throughout Durham and the rest of the state."We get computer donations from big companies, small companies, individuals, anyone who wants to donate their old computer," Delmariani said. "LabCorp is our biggest donor. They give us about 15 to 22 pallets of computers and equipment a month."The first step is triage where we open up the machines, see what's inside them, add what we need so that it meets our specifications and test the hardware. Step two is cleaning. It's the least technical part but one of the most important. When we give kids computers, we want them to be proud of it."And step three is loading the operating system," she said. "We use Ubermix. It's a Linux-based computer software that is virtually virus proof. Then step four is the final test."Detailed instructions ensure that anyone at least 12 years old can come in at any skill level and help Kramden do its work.Jennifer Castillo, a student at Durham Technical Community College, received one of Kramden's refurbished desktop computers during Wednesday's work session. Having recently finished her GED Castillo is now taking college courses as she works toward a degree in criminal justice.Castillo said that she was excited when she found out a month ago that she was getting a computer from Kramden."They've changed a few things at Durham Tech, like my math classes are all online, so I really need this."Aside from the new building, Kramden Institute has implemented two other programs since it began in 2003 that allow it to better serve the community. The Tech Equipment Partners program provides local nonprofits with discounted computer equipment including servers and custom OS loads. The Tech Community Partners program allows Kramden to provide reduced cost computers to people who aren't students but are in need of a computer and received services from specific agencies including Durham Technical Community College, the Center for Child and Family Health and First in Families in North Carolina.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Herald-Sun (Durham, N.C.) • Mechanical Magic: Fantastic vehicles and machines spring to life in Ipswich

D.July 28--IPSWICH -- From the front, the sun-faded Ford Taurus looks like any other older sedan: A simple square frame with tan interior. At second glance, the Taurus appears incomplete, as the rear portion is cut off completely, leaving only the front wheels, engine and seats. Instead, a motorcycle engine and wheel is attached to the undercarriage. On top of the lone cycle seat rests Winnie the Pooh, fixed in a wave of plastic exuberance.Folks in the area tend to stare whenever Winnie the Pooh passes by, but Don Perrion rarely drives low-profile. His fleet of homemade vehicles, stashed in various lots and storage units around Ipswich, include a front-wheel drive Pontiac Montana van attached to an extended pickup flatbed and a Chrysler sedan featuring a John Deere tractor cab in place of standard interior."People pass me all the time going down the road and they twist their heads right around," Perrion said. The three-wheeled Ford Taurus-motorcycle is just one of Perrion's mechanical creations. From piecing together a potato tiller at 12 years old to making a human hamster wheel in his retirement free time, the 75-year-old Ipswich man has a way with gears and hydraulics to scrap metal and everything between.Using scavenged metal, damaged vehicles and spare parts, Perrion has crafted unique vehicles, machines and contraptions at his workshop in Ipswich for years. Perrion said projects like the "Winnie the Pooh" car begin as a challenge to build something completely original and new."With the (Taurus), I just wanted to put a motorcycle on something and see if it could work," he said.Perrion built the Taurus-cycle several years ago and still regularly drives it around town. The fully operable vehicle reaches speeds up to 70 miles per hour."It runs like any other car," Perrion said. "I take it on the highway and drive it around town all the time. It's just fun to drive."His collection is the Johnny Cash tune "One Piece At a Time" sprung to life, an assortment of partial vehicles and mismatched brands accumulated over the years. However, Perrion said he has registered his vehicles without a problem."The mechanics of the car aren't changed," he said. "I don't change any of the safety features like the transmission or power steering or the engine. So the body changed a little, and there's nothing wrong with that."The retired farme儲存倉's creations are more than automobiles and farm equipment. Perhaps his most bizarre contraption is a human exercise machine: a rotating steel wheel several feet wide and at least 6 feet tall. Originally built for a doctor who wanted a way to walk his dog during the winter months, Perrion compared the device to an oversized gerbil wheel."The doctor ended up moving, but he paid me for my work so I take it to Trail Days for girls and boys to run in," he said. "Anybody could use it and you can still walk your dog with it if you wanted to."Perrion scrounges resource centers and auto shops for scrap parts for potential projects. He attributed his resourceful mentality to his agricultural upbringing and background."I farmed, and when you begin farming, you're too poor to buy anything, so I made quite a bit of my own machinery," he said. "I get parts to put together and find a need and then fill the need. It's simple."Perrion's reputation as a mechanic has followed him into retirement. He often receives fix-it requests for bicycles or lawn mowers from community members and provides the service at no cost if time permits. Though he has no desire to open a shop, Perrion said he enjoys the creative process from start to finish."It's a challenge in the first place to build something that hasn't been built and see if it can be done," he said. "Then there is the satisfaction in having it. I've never built something that didn't work. Once I'm finished, I go onto build something else."Inside one of Perrion's workshop is the beginning of his next project, an old white sedan, covered in dust. The unremarkable car is a fresh canvas for his unusual form of art. Like any good painter though, Perrion won't reveal details of his latest work.Don Perrion's most unique vehicles--Ford Taurus combined with a motorcycle. Three-wheeled vehicle is open to the elements from the rear. A plastic Winnie the Pooh figure provides company.--Chrysler sedan with a John Deere tractor cab. The original Chrysler interior instruments (dashboard, pedals, steering wheels) are attached to the cab.--Full-size truck with flatbed featuring a corn-cleaning machine. Perrion built the corn cleaner using concepts taken from vacuum cleaners.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the American News (Aberdeen, S.D.)
