Source: Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Calif. Jan. 15--UPLAND -- In a matter of minutes, four machines bulldozed what several dozen homeless people considered their home, their sanctuary. For nine months, homeless people set up make-shift tents nestled around dirt and rock piles. But by 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning, as the sun was rising, crews worked to clear out the nearly five-acre site.Lori Stevens, 55, looked on from the sidewalk as the earthmovers picked up tents, blankets, chairs and emptied the items into one of two large trash bins."It was a dirt field but that was our home," she said, holding her cell phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other. "Where do they want us to go? Do they expect us to just vanish -- I'm still here."A handful of the homeless were still retrieving items from the premises as crews and machines worked on clearing out the southern edge of the lot. Many, unable to find storage, had unloaded items onto the sidewalk. Those who could were moving their belongings into a temporary space provided by Calvary Chapel of Upland which is adjacent to tent city.Upland obtained a temporary restraining order late last week, allowing city officials to give a 72-hour notice to evict the group from the private property in the 2100 block of 11th Street. City officials said the camp has grown to more than 100 people.Upland officials had been contacted by neighboring business owners who complained the site had become a public nuisance, said Jeff Zwack, the city's development services director. The city had to intervene as the property is tied up in bankruptcy proceedings, and there was no clear owner, he said. But local church leaders say they believe Upland is trying to push the problem out of the city rather than finding a solution. Leaders point to the fact that many living at the tent city had been displaced by weed abatement requirements in the field south of Cable Airport.Emotions ran high at Monday night's City Council meeting as more than a dozen homeless people and volunteers from faith-based groups pleaded for the council to overturn the temporary restraining order."Why not give these people 30 days? Why does it have to be so abrupt, they don't have any where to go. Right now 迷你倉ny place they go, they are going to get cited," said Michael Averkiou, with Calvary Chapel.Averkiou said he came in contact with this group nearly nine months ago while attending Calvary Chapel of Upland."We had our concerns at first, not knowing anything about this group but you know what? I like them. They are Americans, and they deserve more," he said. For the past nine months, he has developed a friendship with those living there and providing them rides to doctor's appointments.Jason Purvis conducts outreach ministries for Mountainview Faith Community Church in Rancho Cucamonga. As a business owner, Purvis said he can understand there are two sides to this story and the impact the presence that homeless people can have on a business."I ask the question, 'What's the answer?' We've told them to leave so now you'll have policeman chasing them around the city. You've told them to vacate, and now you will have churches without a single point to serve," Purvis said.Purvis said he is not there to point fingers and make assumptions because he doesn't know what was happening on a day-to-day basis."We do know we want to help, and we want to be there and make a difference," he said. But city officials have contended they are committed to addressing homelessness and for the past 20 years has been directing federal funding to local organizations that provide assistance to the homeless population. But resident Eric Gavin said he believes the solution should be addressed by local groups and churches, not the city.Mike Henry, who has been living on the streets for more than a year, said he lost his job and soon enough unemployment money dried up and he found himself unable to afford rent. When he showed up at the Upland tent city a couple of months ago he had nothing with him. By the end of the day, those living on the private property had given him a tent and blankets."It's so unnecessary," Henry said about the removal. "It's just going to end up vacant for years and just sit there. I just got to move on."Copyright: ___ (c)2014 the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (Ontario, Calif.) Sharp eyes, sound judgment
By LIU KUN in Wuhanliukun@chinadaily.self storagecom.cn Dressed like a locksmith, Wang Mingzhu arrives at his usual spot in the inner city of Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, at 9 am. But, unlike the usual locksmith, he is more interested in observing the crowds than his business.Wang is a plainclothes policeman. After twohours, a pregnantwomaninred catches Wang’s attention, and after the woman passes in front of him,Wang stands up and follows her. The woman looks around frequently and cautiously, so Wang stops and signals to a “vendor” nearby to take over the stalking. Roaming around for half an hour, the womanseems tonotice that shehas beenfollowed and enters a public lavatory. Minutes later, outwalks a fashionablewoman in gray shirt. Thewoman has abandoned her pregnant disguise and changed her clothes to ditch her stalkers. But her trick fails to escape the professional eyes of Wang, who swiftly orders other plainclothes police personnel to track her into a shoe store. Wang has sound judgment—the woman is a pickpocket. Just as she successfully sneaks a customer’s handbag into her backpack and is about to flee,Wang and his colleague nab her on the spot. How to spot a “fake pregnant woman”? Wang raises his bushy eyebrows. “You can tell fromthe posture and gait,” he says. As a senior policeman, Wang has been focusing on pickpocketing since 2003. In recent years, Wang has caught more than 2,000 pickpockets. Every day, Wang and his team patrol around Zhongshan Road, the downtown commercial center ofWuhan, where thehigh concentration of people and businesses make theft a common occurrence. “Some people think catching thieves is easy,” Wang says. “The job is in fact more technical than that.” When observing crowds, regular people won’t notice any abnormalities, but Wang and his team members are able to detect the subtle nervousness of cautious pickpockets. “Timing is equally important,” explains Wang. “If seized early, the thief will plead their 迷你倉nnocence. If you catch them too late, they won’t admit the crime because the stolen goods have already been transferred elsewhere.” Wang recruits dozens of volunteers. The “vendors” who helped him track the “fake pregnantwoman” are his righthandmen. “Wang can deal with all kinds of pickpockets. He recognizes them quickly and responds at the right time,” Dong Anxin, the instructor of the local Minquan Police Station, says of Wang. “Thieves are afraid of him.” Some thieves have been put behind bars by Wang several times, and they threaten that they will “kick his ass when they get out”. Wang is oblivious to these types of threats. “Iwouldn’t stay on the job if I amafraid.” But the ironman felt frightened once. It was on Aug 15, 2006, when Wang got into a fight with a tough thief, and when Wang finally seized the man’s neck and brought him down, the thief suddenly turned around and bit Wang’s upper leg so hard that it bled. The thief, who went under the alias Liu Sha, was a 24yearold habitual thief. During interrogation, he confessed that he was HIV positive, and confirmation from a hospital shookWang. “I tookprescribedmedicine everyday and avoided hanging outwithmy girlfriend and family during that time,” he says. Luckily, the test results showedWang had not been infected. Wang believes thieves are no different from others. “I hate their deed, but I pity them too,” says Wang. “Sometimes we talk with them. If they have difficulties in life,we will try our best to help themout.” Wang was voted one of the 21 favorite policemen around the country in an online survey organized by People’s Daily in late 2013. After work, Wang is a loving father. He spends most of his spare time with his wife and son, going to parks. When his little boy is too tired from playing, Wang carries him home on his back. “I’m not a hero,” says Wang, “I’m just an ordinary man with a deep love formywork and family.” Xing Yi and Zhang Jihong contributed to this story.

Does MLK matter to young
Source: The Bakersfield CalifornianJan. 15--For 30 years, Bakersfield residents, especially in the African-American community, have remembered Martin Luther King on his birthday -- a national holiday since 1983.But what does the day, the man and the cause he fought to advance, mean to young people today?"We try to make sure that young people understand that all of the civil rights you have came at a cost," said Stephanie Campbell, organizer of a community cleanup and other daytime activities to honor King."Many people made the sacrifice."The observance of King's birthday Monday begins with the community cleanup in southeast Bakersfield starting at 7 a.m. A memorial breakfast will be held at the Martin Luther King Center at 8:30 a.m., followed by a free youth and community lunch and seminars starting at noon. In the evening, a candlelight march and memorial service will begin at 6 at the Liberty Bell in downtown Bakersfield and travel to First Presbyterian Church at 17th and H streets. But organizers of the observances will tell you that it takes more than a one-day celebration to keep King's memory -- and his dream -- alive for young people whose own parents weren't born until after King's death."The young people don't have nobody to follow," said the Rev. Leo Williams, chairman of the march and memorial service.Williams, an associate minister at Rising Star Baptist Church, said young black men in particular have no faith in King's dream, because society has failed them."We have thrown our young people to the dogs," he said.Citing such problems as fatherless homes, gang violence, even violent video games as contributors to the problem, Williams said young people, especially young men, have nothing to believe in, starting with themselves. And it's not just a black problem. According to the 2012 Report Card published by the Kern County Network for Children, local倉children fare worse than those in other parts of the state when it comes to preventable health problems (obesity, STDs, substance abuse), teen pregnancy rates and growing up in single-parent households at or below the poverty level. They also lag behind children in test scores and high school completion rates. black students fare the worst in dropout rates.Williams said he also encounters many young people who come to his church who can't read, and they don't go to school. Why? No hope, Williams said."The average African-American boy or girl, they know they have to be three times better to get the same job," he said. "And they can't get the job."With such daunting challenges -- many of which were identified by King in the late 1950s and early 1960s -- how does one, as the song says, overcome?"We have to teach young men their worth," the pastor said. But problems like blight, violence and crime cause children to lose hope, Campbell said. Fighting such problems is part of the cure."We expect between 300 and 500 kids working on projects (on Martin Luther King Day)," she said."They'll be cleaning up graffiti, hauling trash from front yards, mostly for senior citizens."We work on it together as a group and that carries over for the year. It's a time to share and give the kids some goals."Williams said it's also necessary for adults, especially father figures, to take an active interest in children to give them guidance. Young people need to stay in school and they have to have the hope of finding meaningful employment."I'm sorry to say it, but a woman can't teach a boy how to be a man," Williams said. "If you don't train him while he's young, he's training his own self."Copyright: ___ (c)2014 The Bakersfield Californian (Bakersfield, Calif.)
