Arianespace ready for Asia boom
French satellite launch firm expects growth in broadcast and broadband services and switch to digital TV to create opportunities in the regionWhen Stephane Israel was named the new chairman and chief executive of Arianespace in April, his goal was to tap into more growth opportunities in the Asia-Pacific while further advancing the company’s lead as the world’s top satellite launch services provider.迷你倉“The Asia-Pacific is a key market for Arianespace, with more than a third of the company’s global business generated in the region,” Israel said.Arianespace, founded in France in 1980, was the world’s first commercial satellite launch company. It has accounted for more than half of the commercial satellite launches worldwide in the past 33 years. The firm provides services to commercial satellite operators and government space agencies around the globe with a range of launchers: the Ariane 5 heavy-lift launch vehicle, the Soyuz medium-sized launcher and the Vega lightweight launcher. Those rockets are launched from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana, an overseas region of France on the North Atlantic coast of South America. The 21 shareholders of Arianespace include French space agency CNES, space technology company Astrium and various European space companies, which represent 10 countries across the continent.According to the Satellite Industry Association, the global satellite launch industry grew 35 per cent last year to US$6.5 billion from 2011. The overall industry – comprising satellite services, manufacturing, launch and ground equipment – expanded 7 per cent to US$189.5 billion from the previous year.Since opening its offices in Tokyo in 1986 and Singapore in 1996, Arianespace has become a major partner to satellite communications operators and manufacturers in the Asia-Pacific. The firm had launched 67 geostationary satellites for 12 operators in the region by last month, giving it a market share exceeding 70 per cent.Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) from Hong Kong is a significant new customer for Arianespace, with the launch of its ABS 2 satellite planned early next year. One of the fastest-growing premium satellite operators in the world, ABS provides direct television broadcast, multimedia applications, telecommunications and data transmission services for the Asia-Pacific, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.Other Arianespace customers in the region include Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan, Singapore Telecom, Korea Telecom, Optus in Australia, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and NTT DoCoMo.Israel said Arianespace had launched two telecommunications satellites for ISRO this year using the Ariane 5 launcher, and an Earth observation satellite for Vietnam using the Vega light launcher.By last month, Arianespace had 13 bookings worldwide this year, valued at ?1.16 billion (HK$12.4 billion) and representing a 62 per cent global ma儲存倉ket share. Its order book backlog is at a record ?4.14 billion, which it says will ensure more than three years of launch activities.“This unmatched commercial performance is further enhanced by Arianespace’s capability to be reactive when the customers’ satellites are ready and our ability to launch them on time, which we have demonstrated mission after mission at the spaceport in French Guiana,” Israel said. But his optimism over Arianespace’s prospects may be tempered by challenges ahead. US entrepreneur Elon Musk, a co-founder of global online payments giant PayPal, has been aggressively positioning his own space transport company, SpaceX, as a viable challenger to the French industry leader. In an interview, Israel shared Arianespace’s view from its lofty perch in the satellite industry. What is fuelling demand for satellite launches in the Asia-Pacific?Despite economic uncertainty, the trend is very positive in this region because of the growth in broadcast and broadband services. The revenue increase in the pay-television market, for example, is set to reach US$12 billion from 2012 to 2018. That means the total market in the Asia-Pacific will be about US$44 billion in 2018.More consumers are also moving from analogue to digital TV services because the region is home to the world’s most important TV manufacturers, which are developing innovative products in ultra-high definition. This will have a big impact on the satellite launch market because there will be more and more demand for satellite capacity. The more precise the definition [of the TV screen], the more capacity broadcast providers will need in orbit. There are also many innovative telecommunications network operators, such as those in Australia, which have created solutions that resulted in increased demand for broadband services. We are going to launch at least seven satellites from this region in the next two years. We see many opportunities in the coming years, which is why it is important for us to be close to our customers in the Asia-Pacific and understand what they want. We need to know their expectations. How does Arianespace see China in this industry?Today, China is neither a customer nor a competitor. All satellites for China are launched in orbit by its own launchers. Due to US legislation that bars American components from being used on Chinese rocket launches, China is a bit apart in this industry in terms of competition.Could SpaceX be a strong rival in the next few years? We never underestimate our competitors. SpaceX has won some contracts, so we must take it seriously and be more innovative. But in terms of track record – we have 57 successful launches in a row – there is absolutely no comparison in the industry.Has Arianespace considered becoming part of the emerging space tourism industry? No, space tourism is not something we are considering. The best tourists in space for us are satellites. These are longer-term tourists. When they are up in orbit, they stay there for more than 10 years.

Friday night preview: Huskies, Bison to square off in LHAC
Source: The Tribune-Democrat, Johnstown, Pa.儲存倉Oct. 25--JOHNSTOWN -- Bishop Carrol's Brody Shuty began the season catching passes for the Huskies. Now, the senior captain is throwing them.Turns out, Shuty is pretty effective running Carroll's offense from the quarterback position. The 5-3 Huskies will need a big game out of Shuty and Company tonight against 6-2 Bedford at St. Francis University (7:30 p.m.)."Last (week) was his third game at quarterback," Huskies coach Greg Snyder said of Shuty. "He's an athlete.?He can make things happen. He gives us a big time threat to the outside to run, and that certainly helps our inside game. The last two weeks our offense has really been clicking."Injuries forced Shuty into the quarterback spot during a 14-7 loss to a Bishop Guilfoyle team that brings a six-game winning streak into this week. The Huskies defense has been formidable throughout the season, but the offense has come up big the past two weeks in wins at Johnstown (47-35) and against Cambria Heights (36-14)."Brody has been phenomenal. He had around 100 yards rushing against Johnstown," Snyder said. "He almost had 100 yards rushing against Guilfoyle, and he almost had 100 passing yards against Heights. He's a great kid, a really smart kid. He's really stepped up."Shuty has completed 8 of 28 passes for 150 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He's rushed for 265 yards on 39 carries, a 6.8 average, to complement Carroll's standout senior back Tyler Janosik, who has 742 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 139 carries. Shuty had 271 receiving yards on 15 catches before the move."Janosik is a threat running the football. We want to make sure we limit his yardage,"?Bedford coach Kevin Steele said."With Shuty at quarterback the last couple weeks they've scored a few more points and he's a threat running the ball. They've diversified their attack."Bedford beat Central Cambria (28-14) last week to successfully rebound from a tough setback at Somerset (35-27).The Bisons have multiple contributors on offense, with quarterback Austin Montgomery throwing for 601 yards, four touchdowns and an interception, and four backs with 300 or more rushing yards. Junior Jeremiah Bingham (456 yards, six touchdowns), senior Kody Blevins (383, three), sophomore Montgomery (345, seven) and sophomore August Cook (307, four) have combined for 20 touchdowns."Our kids continue to improve each week,"?Steele said. "They're working very hard. We have a very coachable group of young men."Fortunately, we've had a lot of kids step up. Both older kids and younger kids have played very well.?Our offensive line has done a nice job. Between Montgomery, Bingham, Cook and Blevins, we've had several weapons. We continue to seek balance both running and throwing the football."Steele knows Carroll presents some challenges."They're a very aggressive defense. They have good size and athleticism,"?he said. "They've had good success on defense and created turnovers. Teams have not had a lot of success against them. We'll have our work cut out for us."Snyder sees similarities on the line."I like our size and I like our speed up front,"?Snyder said. "Bedford is a big team. They remind me of our team a little bit."They like to throw a little more than we do. We like to grind it out and pound it out. Games can be won in the trenches. We're going to have to see if our line can get to their line in order for us to be successful."Bishop McCort at Bishop GuilfoyleA year ago, Bishop Guilfoyle entered Point Stadium with a six-game winning streak and seven victories in eight dates. The Marauders left with a 37-0 shellacking courtesy of Bishop McCort. This season, Guilfoyle (6-2) has won six straight since an 0-2 start. Bishop McCort (2-6) has won two of its past three games after and 0-5 start."It's definitely a big game for us," Bishop Guilfoyle coach Justin?Wheeler said. "Last year we came in with the same kind of momentum and they came in, and we played our worst game of the year against them, and they took it to us."Marauders junior quarterback Brandon Chadbourn has been a difference maker since returning under center five weeks ago following an injury. Chadbourn has passed for 479 yards and four touchdowns, and he's rushed for 537 yards and seven scores. Junior Sam McCloskey has 493 rushing yards and five touchdowns as the Marauders have moved into the fifth spot in the 6-A rankings.McCort has used a tandem of sophomore Blake Wade and freshman Levi Cook at quarterback. Music store survives the download-age but Vineyard owner decides to move on
Source: Cape Cod Times, Hyannis, Mass.儲存Oct. 25--EDGARTOWN -- More than 18 years ago, Michael Barnes flipped through a wholesale catalog of music albums at the kitchen table of his mother's house. Only 21, he was preparing to open his own record shop in an Edgartown building rented from his father. In one swoop, he picked out the entire collection of new CDs to initially stock his store, Aboveground Records. Having already worked at two record shops, he picked out some he knew and some that were "blind guesses." It cost him $15,000 but he made sure to get plenty of rock, punk, jazz, blues, reggae and under-the-radar music. He added a few hundred of his own albums, some used vinyl, and opened in June 1995."I always wanted to try and appeal to as many people as I could," Barnes said.It took more than three years to start making money, but the shop eventually took hold, became a beacon for live music, gained national recognition and survived the downloadable music age. Now, the bricks-and-mortar business is slated to close the first week of January. Barnes will keep the business name and music collection and perhaps sell albums at community events. He plans to renovate his current space and rent it out.The Vineyard Haven man said he is honored the store lasted this long and left a lasting impression on people. It is the only record store on the island, he said."All I ever wanted to do was hang out and sell music," said Barnes. "And it seems to have touched people."Barnes, married with two sons, said the shop is still making money and the closure was for reasons other than finances."I'm not mentally invested in it anymore," he said. And, he said he'll make more money renting the space out than running a music shop."I'm not sad about this, but I am sad I'm contributing to one less record store in the country and the world."The shop started making a profit in the late 1990s during the "height of the music industry" when people readily b迷你倉ught compact discs, he said. Throughout the years, his longtime staffer Chris Liberato was able to find a wide scope of independent artists to highlight at the shop. That included bringing in bands to perform live at the store."He had a gift for finding new bands before they found themselves," Barnes said about Liberato, who worked at the store until 2009.The shop was listed by spin.com in 2009 as an honorable mention in an article about the nation's best independent music stores.Liberato said the store's success boils down to the owner."Mike is just really good at his job and he's just somebody people love to talk to and he's really good with people and that's part of running a store like that," Liberato said. The store doubled in size in 2002. Ten years later, Barnes moved into half the space, stopped holding live shows, rented out the original 25-foot-by-27-foot store space.Driving a pair of visitors to the shop Vineyard Haven native and taxi driver Andrea Tierney, 21, said she grew up shopping at the store."I'd buy tons of CDs," Tierney saidBut like so many consumers, Tierney said she mostly listened to her iPod now."The whole music industry has changed," she said.Barnes switched to more vinyl records and used music. About 10,000 vinyl records grace his shop now, which has three walking aisles. There are roughly 9,000 CDs at the store."Those are the people we have been appealing to in recent years," he said about customers who love the "thrill of the hunt" of finding a unique album.Barnes insists such shops can still survive in a digital age under the right circumstances, including focusing on vinyl records, which many people consider more romantic. "People like something tangible, they like looking for something that's not around every corner," he said.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, Mass.)

彭秀慧.facebook.com/kearenpang.official迷你倉
