Source: The Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg, Va. Sept. 19--ACCORDING TO WILLIAM Shakespeare, "All the world's a stage," but at Via Colori, all the world's a canvas.Well, Sophia and Charlotte streets downtown will be this weekend, anyway.Via Colori is a street-art festival that is a modern-day take on an age-old tradition. The idea comes from 16th-century Italy, where artists would use chalk to paint religious icons in the courtyards of cathedrals, hoping to earn some change from appreciative pilgrims. Now, the festival seeks to reawaken the public's appreciation for this kind of street art."Street painting is a tradition that's being revived around the world as a very interesting, dynamic, interactive art form," said local artist Mirinda Reynolds, who has helped coordinate the event this year and is one of the featured artists."It is different from every other show. It's not stagnant; it's not something that's sitting in a frame that's been in a box for months or years waiting to be sold. It's the process that we're showingnd the productll in one weekend."This year marks the first time that the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center has been responsible for planning and organizing the festival, taking the reins from the city of Fredericksburg.Proceeds from the event, which is supported by various local sponsors, will benefit museum programs, including exhibitions, art and history education programs for all ages, lectures and hands-on arts and crafts.Nick Candela, an art teacher at Stafford Senior High School and an active participant in Via Colori over the past three years, will serve as Fredericksburg's signature artist."He's talented, not only as a teacher, but as a street artist," said Christa Stabler, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the FAMCC.The weekend will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday with Art Comes Alive!, where artists will set up studios throughout the museum and paint to live music from the Skiffle Lounge Sound, a band that mixes old-time Americana and modern jazz. Food and beverages will be provided by Bistro Bethem. At the end of the night, the paintings will be auctioned to benefit the FAMCC.Meanwhile, volunteers will be drawing up the 120 10-foot-by-10-foot squares that artists of all ages and levels of experience will spend the following days filling with their masterpieces. The artists may not be hitting the streets until this weekend, but the creative process for the works of art that will embellish the streets along Riverfront Park starts long before the chalk meets the pavement. There is a great deal of research, designing, outlining and graphing that goes into pulling the work together. The FAMCC has fostered the process by offering a series of classes throughout the year cal自存倉ed Via Tutori to help guide the artists, from selecting their subject to working on their technique."Everything has to be prepared in advance perfectly to fit a scale of 10 foot by 10 foot," said Reynolds, who, along with Candela, was one of the Via Tutori instructors. "With 100 square feet, every little inch is essential in making the picture successful."Reynolds teaches art at Fredericksburg Academy and has been preparing a group of about 50 students, from first through 12th grade, for the festival. Some say that those who can, do, and those who can't, teach?ut this is not true in her case. Reynolds, who was the 2011 Via Colori signature artist, will contribute a pop-art piece that aims to combine the traditional and the modern to the festival. Her piece plays on the Renaissance image of "Madonna and Child," but gives it a modern twist by featuring Duchess Kate Middleton and the newborn Prince George, with the London Eye serving as the Duchess' halo."I just hope to make it a little fun so that I'm bringing both the traditions of Renaissance Italy and the heart of street painting to a modern place by integrating these two ideas," said Reynolds. In addition to the live street art creation, the festivities will include live music, food and wine vendors. There will also be a designated area where children can unleash their creativity with provided art supplies. For many, Via Colori serves as one of the area's greatest connections between artists and the local community."Making that connection might not have happened if we didn't have this festival," said Reynolds."Not everybody comes to an art gallery or an art opening," she said, but coming to an event like Via Colori "really opens up thousands and thousands of viewers' minds to be receptive to us as artists."WANT TO GO?What: Via Colori street art festivalWhere: Along Charlotte and Sophia streets near Riverfront Park in Fredericksburg. When: Saturday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 22, noon to 5 p.m.Cost: Free.Info: 540/371-3037, famcc.org or visit Via Colori Fredericksburg on FacebookOther events: Art Comes Alive! 6 p.m. Friday, FAMCC, 1001 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg.

目前最大的3家是ETSY(手工藝品)、FOODZIE(手工菜)和ARTFIRE(藝術品)。

Source: Ventura County Star, Calif. Sept. 19--From the entryway of the house, a visitor can see straight through decorative iron gates to a square courtyard with its centerpiece swimming pool.More than 4,000-square-feet of glass, shaded by overhangs, are set into the steel frame of the single story, square-shaped house with a brick face.John and Carol Bowden call it home. Federal, state and conservation officials call it historic. This summer, the Bowdens' Thousand Oaks home -- officially known as Case Study House 28 -- was one of 10 Case Study houses listed in the National Register of Historic Places after more than a decade of effort by the Los Angeles Conservancy's modern committee. The houses also were listed on the California Register of Historical Resources. The designations are a hard-fought win and point of pride for the Conservancy, which nominated the properties, and likely made the day of modern architecture fans and history buffs."These were highly influential homes," said Adrian Scott Fine, the conservancy's director of advocacy. But what the designations mean in practical terms for an owner often leads to confusion."The basic thing about it, it comes with no restrictions or prohibitions whatsoever," said Jay Correia, senior state historian at California State Parks. "It's an inventory of property that deserves to be recognized. I've likened it to getting a passport stamped."The Case Study houses were built as part of an experimental housing program funded by Arts + Architecture magazine between 1945 and 1966. The magazine commissioned architects who would become some of field's biggest names, such as Richard Neutra and Charles and Ray Eames. They were asked to come up with creative residential designs that could be duplicated and accessible to average people.Case Study House 28 was the program's last single-family home built in 1966 and the only one in Ventura County. It's also one of the largest at 4,500 square feet.Fine said the houses' influenced the look and feel of residential design across the country and internationally. The conservancy helps save historic places like the Case Study Houses and to raise awareness about the structures that tell the story of the Los Angeles region.Carol Bowden fell in love with the house the first time she saw it 25 years ago. The previous owners shared media coverage dating back to 1966 that describes the house's importance. When the Bowdens purchased it in 1987, the design was out of fashion but it was special to them. The Bowdens did not seek to get their home nominated to the national and state register. But they did not formally object, which would have halted the conservancy's efforts. They shied away from raising the profile of the house that is in a gated community."We agree it's a very unique house," Carolmini storageBowden said. "The listing doesn't mean much to us. We value the house for what it is, not anything wonderful it was. I fell in love with the house. I saw it as a work of art."The home, designed by architects Conrad Buff and Donald Hensman, features walls of single paned glass that makes it hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The couple looked at getting double paned glass but the individual panels would not fit into the steel frame. The Bowdens previously installed refrigerated air conditioning to replace antiquated gas water chillers. They also put in solar panels on the roof. A Palm Springs company had to remove the roof's asphalt and gravel and replace it with white foam.Preservation advocates say the house's placement on the national and state register should not hinder the couple from doing more work. Any regulations would be at the local level."It's largely honorific," said Fine, the conservancy director of advocacy. "It really doesn't tie an owner's hands in anyway. The whole idea of this grouping of houses is placing them on the (register) for long-overdue recognition. A lot of people thought this had happened already."Thousand Oaks does not have an ordinance regarding preservation. However, there is an ordinance pertaining to local landmarks and historic places, Deputy Community Development Director Mark Towne said.Properties on the state register are protected by the California Environmental Quality Act. The work on the property is required to undergo environmental review when it would impair the historical significance of the home.Demolition, destruction, relocation, or extreme alterations would damage the significance, according to the California Natural Resource Agency.Ventura County has a Cultural Heritage Board that develops and enforces guidelines for local historic districts, landmarks, points of interest, sites of merit, and potentially eligible historic resources, according to the county's website. The board also establishes and evaluates potential cultural heritage sites. If a local building on the national register needs a permit to do massive work, the city where it's located can contract with the Cultural Heritage Board to review the project.Nicole Dorner, a county senior planner, who works with the board and provided comment on the nomination of Case Study House 28 says the home is unique."It is unusual because I think it's younger than 50 years old," Dorner said, adding that it's exceptionally significant. "If it's younger than 50 years, it is significant and unusual."On mobile: View a map of national and state recognized historic locations around Ventura CountyCopyright: ___ (c)2013 Ventura County Star (Camarillo, Calif.) Source: The Lima News, OhioSept. 18--LIMA -- The desert is about to get a little greener.Government officials, buisness leaders, and members of the community gathered in the parking lot at Lima Senior High School to dedicate a new mobile produce market designed to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to what have been designated as "food deserts" by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, areas where, because of poverty and other contributing factors, residents do not have consistent access to healthy foods. Several of these food deserts have been identified here in Allen County.Part of the Activate Allen County campaign and under the auspices of the West Ohio Food Bank, the Mobile Produce Market is a bus retrofitted to store fresh fruits and vegetables and transport them to areas of need in Allen County. Donated by the Lima/Allen County Regional Transit Authority, this bus has no seats, but rather has racks filled with produce, much like one would find at an outdoor market. But why can't people simply go to Wal-Mart, Chief, or one of the other grocery stores in the community?"If you don't have a car or the means to get to Wal-Mart, you can't get fresh produce," according to Jennifer Niese, Human Resource Manager for Lima's PCS Nitrogen Plant, a division of PotashCorp. Desiring to get this project off the ground, PotashCorp added to the several grants awarded to this project by various organizations by donating $100,000 total to the Mobile Produce Market and the West Ohio Food Bank. Part of those funds, according to Gary Bright, executive director of the food bank, will be used to hire a full-time coordinator for the mobile market, ensuring that it will reach as many needy areas as possible. For Niese and PotashCorp, supporting this endeavor fit right into their goals as a company."The food ban存倉 and the mobile produce unit fit really well with what we do," she said. "A large portion of our business is producing fertilizer. We try to be involved in the areas of food and food development, so this fits right into our philosophy."While PotashCorp has taken the role of a leader in corporate sponsorship, making the Mobile Produce Market a reality was a true community effort, with involvement from city government as well as Apollo Career Center. According to Doug Bodey, Director of High School Programs at Apollo, students from a variety of programs played a part in designing and constructing this produce market."We began with our Computer-Aided Drafting program to come up with some 3D plans," he said, "and we had our carpentry program build frames how it would all be put together. From there, we went to the welding and the Manufacturing Engineering Technology class, and they fabricated all the racks. The auto body students stepped up four days before the end of classes and painted all the racks black. The number of students touched by this project was in the hundreds."As well as seeing the new bus, participants got to partake in a healthy meal served by culinary students from both Apollo and Lima Senior High School, and cooked by Bryant Terry, an eco chef and food justice activist who has earned multiple awards for food education and social change. As this bus starts taking its wares throughout the county, starting Oct. 1, it will be the culmination of the years of effort to see a healthier Allen County. Pastor Dennis Ward of Second Baptist Church summed it up in his prayer of dedication:"I pray this will be a blessing to the community."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Lima News (Lima, Ohio) Visit The Lima News (Lima, Ohio) at .limaohio.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉
