Obituary: Rachel A. Freund / Tenacious fighter for people with mental illnesses
Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteSept. 20--Rachel A. Freund, with a tenacity for organizing and passion for the underdog, promoted the causes of people with mental illness in ways few others envisioned or tried in recent years.Through advocacy and educational work with a variety of organizations, including the Mental Health Association of Allegheny County, the Disability Voting Coalition and Let Our Voices Be Heard, Ms. Freund ensured that more people with disabilities were registered to vote, were able to speak up for themselves and could have more optimism about their futures.Over the years, hundreds of people trying to overcome mental health problems visited legislators in Harrisburg to advocate for their issues, because Ms. Freund had organized the bus trips and led them there with guidance on how to present their case."She empowered disenfranchised people to be able to influence decisions that impact their lives, and the importance of that is huge," said Michelle McMurray, chief executive officer of Mental Health America Allegheny County, formerly known as the Mental Health Association.Ms. Freund died Wednesday at the residence of Good Samaritan Hospice in Marshall, more than two years after being diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer. A resident of Ross, she was 54 and had continued working on disability issues until recent months, though her illness and chemotherapy treatments had slowed her down.Originally from McCandless, Ms. Freund was known for her constructive energy through three decades of work in the disabilities field, ever since obtaining a bachelor's degree in special education from Slippery Rock University. She had a variety of counseling, educational and case management roles during stints at Mayview State Hospital, Community Human Services, Allegheny County's Department of Human Services and the Renaissance Center rehabilitation program before finding the position she enjoyed best: coordinating education and outreach for the Mental Health Association. There, Ms. Freund immersed herself in fieldwork bridging the gap between those with mental disabilities and those with physical impairments and building a network of government officials who would interact with her and her constituents. And she was viewed as a champion by many of those on whose b迷你倉half she was working."She had a talent for making everybody in the room feel special. She was able to find a gold nugget in what everybody was saying, and she was so good at encouraging people to be active and involved," said Paul O'Hanlon, a lawyer for the Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania. He worked with Ms. Freund on numerous issues and credited her with a large role in increasing voter registration among Allegheny County's population with disabilities and in winning an increase from the state in cash supplements to low-income personal care home residents.Ms. Freund received several local and state awards, including a lifetime achievement award last year from Mental Health America. Penny Perlman, an Avalon resident who was a colleague of hers at multiple organizations, said affection for her was so strong that people would cheer instead of simply clap when Ms. Freund's name was mentioned on such occasions."She didn't even realize how good she was," Ms. Perlman said. "She would be up against great odds, but never get discouraged and never give up."Her second husband, Paul Freund, said she was like that in fighting her disease as well. She was a longtime kayaker and bicyclist who inspired others with self-made greeting cards she artistically produced while battling cancer. In addition to her husband, Ms. Freund is survived by three sons, Nick Buls of Harrisburg, Paul Freund of Mt. Lebanon and Jake Buls of Dormont; a brother, Jeff Moore of Cranberry; and three sisters, Rebecca Linn of Nederland, Colo., Sherry Floyd of Prospect and Carole Kalmbach of Harmony.Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Boylan Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople.A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the English Lutheran Church, 200 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople. Tourism helps Lhoba tribe preserve unique culture
Wearing beaded necklaces and traditional wool costumes, members of the Lhoba people dance around the yin-yang tree, a real-life version of the Tree of Souls from the movie “Avatar. Unlike the Na’Vis, the Lhoba people, with a total population of more than 3,100, are performing a traditional sword dance to entertain visitors at the forest-concealed area in the southeast of the Tibet Autonomous Region.“The costume has been listed as the nation’s intangible cultural heritage,” said Dawa Chodron, a 31-year-old local tour guide who has returned to her hometown after graduating from a high school in a second-tier city in southwest China. The sword dance is a Lhoba tradition celebrating harvest, hunting or the practice of becoming sworn brothers, according to Chodron. “Visitors from home and abroad are also attracted by our ancestral customs and religious practices,” she said. The Lhoba, one of China’s smallest ethnic minorities in terms of population, live mainly in Mainling County of Tibet.Located near the Brahmaputra River, Chodron’s hometown of Qionglin Village is the largest inhabitation for the ethnic group.Chodron’s ancestors were the first cultivators in the Himalaya mountains, but they led a primitive life even as late as 1950.The Lhoba have their own spoken language, but no written form. They once kept records by carving notches in wood or tying knots, and most speak Tibetan. To avoid attacks by bigger clans, the Lhoba lived a sequestered life of hunting and planting highland barley and buckwheat. They a迷你倉so cut trees, processed timber and collected herbal medicines to trade for food occasionally.Tourists have been coming to the Lhoba’s secret world since the 1990s, and completion of Mainling Airport in 2005 has freed visitors from troubled transport. To protect the environment, Mainling County receives at most 2,000 visitors per day, and visitors are not allowed to drive vehicles in the villages, leaving them at the tourist center instead.A two-story white building with log cabins beside it is the home of villager Penba. As basic as it looks from the outside, the well-decorated rooms are full of modern household devices, including a television, washing machine and refrigerator.Though the natural conditions are unfavorable, the Lhoba people have managed to glimpse the outside world through the magic of Weibo and WeChat, China’s most popular messaging and social networking platforms.“Now we are no longer labeled barbarians, as eco-tourism has transformed hunters and loggers into cultural entertainers,” said the 50-year-old Penba. All 176 villagers in Qionglin Village are covered by the national medical care system. For serious illnesses, reimbursements can reach as high as 80,000 yuan (US$13,064).Gesang, chief of the county publicity office and the first Lhoba university graduate, believes that tourism has aroused the Lhoba people’s awareness of passing on their culture and preserving the ecological environment. “It’s our responsibility to carry on the Lhoba civilization as we try to keep pace with the times,” he said.

杜嘯鴻info@practicaloption.com.hk迷你倉

Oro Valley State of the Town event to gather movers, shakers
Source: The Arizona Daily Star, TucsonSept. 19--Oro Valley's annual State of the Town address is also a luncheon. But that doesn't mean its guest of honor, Mayor Satish Hiremath, gets to sit down and eat."I'm pretty much constantly busy," Hiremath said of the event. "I don't really have time to eat. It is a very good meal, though. I can tell you that. It's not the normal rubber chicken people serve at these kinds of things."The 2013 Oro Valley State of the Town Address is at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 26 at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort, 10000 N. Oracle Road.Hiremath, who will give a talk about the accomplishments and direction of the town, isn't the only one busy at the event, which will no doubt forge connections and collaborations.A major networking event, the luncheon gathers crowds of more than 500 representatives of businesses, nonprofits and local governments.Greater Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dave Perry, whose organization stages the event, said it has grown every year since it started near the turn of the century.Attendance last year was 517, and Perry projected the number would rise to 550 this year. Eventually, Perry would like to fill up the resort's 750-capacity banquet room."I think that it's really the singular Oro Valley gathering, if you think about it," he said. "It's the one place everybody's in one room to talk about this place where we live and work. It doesn't have a parallel. People want to go there to learn what's going on and learn where we're going as a town. That really has resonance."Hiremath said he takes care to make the event jovial and relaxed rather than stiff and proper."It's one of those things where we use it as a town to really showcase what Oro Valley is about," he said. "Where we're going to head, where we've been. I think it's different from a lot of other state of the towns that just give you a report card."Hiremath said he uses the event to help get people on the same page and迷你倉最平help them buy into his vision."It's a real exciting time for me," he said. "I utilize the state of the town in order to kind of establish a mindset."Hiremath said he gets the sense that event attendees are there for the excitement rather than a sense of having to be there."It's no disrespect to the prior mayor, but before it was really, 'I just guess I've got to go because I've got to go to show a sign of support,'" Hiremath said. "We're looking at increases in attendance every year, and aiming for a very high number. The difference is people who show up truly want to hear all the stuff about the vision and where the town is going. I think there's a really big difference, and a ton of energy in that room."The event starts with a business expo and registration before lunch, and the speech start at noon.In his talk, Hiremath will focus on "healthy growth," which he defines as the holistic development of a community rather than a few indicators."Too often we see communities that pour their resources into one focus area while another area crumbles away," he wrote in a preview of the speech. "The town of Oro Valley has taken great care to ensure that its roots and core values are nourished and maintained so that we are well-positioned for the opportunities that lie ahead. As a result, we've developed a strong framework for this year's successes and our vision for the future."Hiremath cited the Oro Valley Aquatic Center, sports tourism, annexations and business-friendly programs among the town's recent successes.Perry said the event is crucial to create more of those successes."I think it is significant for businesses looking to leadership in government to project a vision that's supportive," he said. "To share the good stories that are going on and to encourage folks is really important."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Arizona Daily Star (Tucson, Ariz.)
mini storage
