Bomb scare conviction thrown out amid errors
A Pakistani man who spent 10 months in jail for creating a bomb scare had his conviction quashed yesterday due to errors by the prosecutors and an interpreter.迷你倉新蒲崗In overturning the conviction against the man, named Shahid, High Court judge Ian McWalters said the Punjabi-to-English interpretation had been flawed. One part of the particulars in the charge had been wrongly removed by the prosecution, making the charge “defective”.A spokesman for the Department of Justice confirmed that part of the charge had been “inadvertently omitted”.When reading another charge to the man, an interpreter had wrongly translated the term “with intention to induce … other persons to believe that a bomb … is present” to “with intention to scare” people that a bomb could be detonated.Asking for Shahid’s plea, the interpreter asked h迷你倉出租m only: “Do you plea [ sic] guilty?”, omitting the words “or not guilty”.Shahid was jailed for 10 months in October last year after he pleaded guilty to two counts of relaying false information about the existence of a bomb.He had strapped a rectangular object to his left wrist with black electrical tape, shouting, “Explosion!” on a train at Central. The object was a mobile phone. Shahid had served his prison term before the appeal. The judge wrote: “The standard of interpretation provided to this appellant … fell below the constitutionally guaranteed standard and thereby deprived the appellant of a fair trial.“Equally surprising is the fact that in Hong Kong, where translation has been such an important part of our judicial proceedings, there appear to be no decisions on mistranslation of pleas or evidence.”

Breaking the shopping mould in China
Lim Beng Chee is pushing his mall-owning firm CMA to create unique experiences for shoppers, including tennis courts and rooftop gardensVery few people understand shopping malls like Lim Beng Chee, the chief executive of Capital Malls Asia (CMA).儲存Overseeing an international portfolio across five countries that attracts two to three million shoppers daily, Lim is firmly against cookie-cutter malls. CMA runs 19 properties in Singapore, like Clarke Quay, mostly along the city-state’s subway lines. The group likes to break its traditional mould when foraying into the mainland market, for example by recreating streetscapes inside its centres, and is even constructing a mall in Chengdu with a rooftop garden and tennis court.CMA now operates 51 malls in 36 cities on the mainland, and another 10 are on the way. It’s also been a pioneer of sort, helping prominent international brands such as Gap open their first stores on the mainland.Lim shares with the Post his strategy for striking the right balance of stores in CMA’s properties throughout the globe and tells us why supermarkets are key to good malls in China and why cinemas are the way to capture an Indian shopper’s heart. What is your approach to managing tenant mix? In Hong Kong, lower profit margin retailers like food and beverage (F&B) outlets and cinemas are struggling to find space in prime retail districts. IFC Mall for instance has nearly halved the number of F&B outlets since 2006.That situation is probably quite unique to Hong Kong. A lot of the properties are not owned by a single owner so a lot of the shop houses will want to maximise rents. For us, the shopping mall is quite different. We are looking for balance and we can afford to balance the rentals. For example, if you want to maximise rents, why should you have a supermarket in the mall? They take up a lot of space and don’t really pay that much in rent but we know this is what our shoppers need so we have to balance.Having said that, we want to make sure our retailers are working hard to provide the best services to our shoppers. Those that are sluggish obviously have to be changed but we need not maximise every single thing. After a while, you need to come back to the shoppers. I still remember when IFC first opened back in 2004, there were hardly any F&B outlets. Then they shifted to have food and now they’re shifting back, so I think they’re trying to find the balance. What differences in customer behaviour have you noticed across countries?China is about lifestyle. We may not think much of drinking coffee at Starbucks but in some second- and third-tier cities, it has become an affordable luxury. People may go on dates to Starbucks whereas in Hong Kong, Starbucks is very ordinary. They are always looking for aspirational brands and like to discover new brands. In India, it’s very intense because there’s a lack of good retail outlets. Young people are quite affluent because of the success of the outsourcing business. They have the money to spend but not enough good outlets to go to. One of the key entertainments they have is cinema. In China if you open a mall, a supermarket is essential. In India, the supermarket can be small but the cinema must be good. If you ask the average Indian, especially those from Mumbai or Bangalore, young people watch two to three movies a week compared to Hongkongers who maybe watch a movie once a month. What are the most significant challenges to opening up in a second- or third-tier Chinese city? The challenge has always been 新蒲崗迷你倉hat shoppers are not familiar with a shopping mall and not enough good retailers go into this market but it’s slowly opening up. It’s a chicken and egg issue. Good-quality retailers are wary of bad landlords so they want to open in a good shopping mall. As a retailer you invest into the store. But with a lot of good shopping mall owners going to second and third-tier cities, it brought quite a lot of retailers into the market – that created the variety and the shoppers are happy to come in and created a win-win situation. The question is how do you actually bring all these good retailers in? With good retailers you get better sales so that gives us better rentals and it creates a virtuous cycle. Good retailers bring in better shoppers. Better shoppers bring in better retailers. What is the most exciting frontier for CMA?Actually I don’t think it’s about cities, it’s about us creating new products. If you go to Singapore and see our malls, almost every one of our malls is quite different – positioning wise, the way we do our hardware, the way we engage our shoppers. The shopper profile varies.Likewise in China, we’re trying to create something different. For example we’re going to open a new mall in Chengdu and create one of the largest rooftop gardens where the families can come in and bring their kids. The old folks can exercise, you can play tennis, you can bring your dog. In some places the landscape is quite harsh, so we’re creating softscapes and we’ll have restaurants by the park. With every one we are trying to do something different.Chinese shoppers tend to prefer malls over standalone street boutiques. Do you think that’s a trend that’s here to stay and if so, will the West adapt to Chinese preferences as their influence as consumers grows?Malls are doing very well in the US. It’s just that within New York City there’s no available land to build a shopping mall and in Europe, there are small retailer protection rights so new malls can only be opened on the outskirts. But Westfield just opened two malls in London and they are doing very well because although shoppers do like to go outdoors to shop, the weather is sometimes not so friendly. The constant drizzle in London is not very convenient and parking in Oxford Street is crazy.Because Asia developed a bit later, we actually have land that can be earmarked for shopping. That helps in aggregating things and from an efficiency point of view it’s a lot easier for retailers. In a shopping mall we will have a loading and unloading bay so it’s easier for suppliers to come in.How are you keeping pace with customers’ digital behaviour? It’s still early days for apps. There’s a whole range of shoppers – the more senior ones will not be familiar with apps so we have to cater to both these communities. One of the apps we have is for store directories – that’s quite usual but I think there are more opportunities for us to engage our shoppers better through their smartphone. For example, I went to see Hysan Place in Causeway Bay and they have a table booking system. It’s on the second floor, you have to physically go up to the counter to book but it’s the central counter to reserve tables at any of their restaurants. These are things we will have to do in the next few years but we have to do it at a pace where our customers are comfortable. Technology is always changing. If I implement something that’s too aggressive and customers don’t respond, it’s actually a waste of resources. We always look to calibrate at the right pace.mini storage

Start the presses!
Source: Odessa American, TexasAug.迷你倉 16--It's been a long time, two years to be exact, since the University of Texas of the Permian Basin's bi-monthly newspaper, Mesa Journal, has been available in physical form.In August 2011, due to budget cuts, the paper switched from its traditional physical medium to a completely digital portable document format (PDF) system that some argue had a stark decline in readership and accessibility.UTPB President David Watts agreed that by going back in print the paper will reach a different audience and that the physical medium is an accessible one.He did concede that while the decision to move the paper to online only was due to the lack of resources to devote to the program, the move may have had a negative impact on the paper."The move to online only was an experiment encouraged by limited resources," Watts said when asked if he supported the online-only medium. "It may have been pre-mature."Teresa Sewell, UTPB senior associate vice president of student services, said after two years spent online-only, UTPB students indicated they would like to see the paper back in print."The PDF-version just wasn't very user-friendly," Sewell said.Odessa American City Editor Celinda Hawkins started as advisor for the Mesa Journal in January 2012 and said it has been a challenge to keep the Mesa Journal visible.Hawkins continued by saying it hasn't been easy to stay relevant because of the drawbacks in accessibility that came with a PDF file. She described going before the UTPB student senate in May of 2012 to argue their case to go back in print, which was approved by the senate given the Mesa Journal would only print half as many copies per edition as they normally have in the past. But, ultimately the funds to go back in p文件倉int were not granted until one year later in May 2013."We are very excited about that," Hawkins said.Incoming editor of the Mesa Journal Jared Wilson is planning to hit the ground running with their first print issue having been printed Thursday.Wilson said his first issue aboard the Mesa Journal was their last issue in print and he feels a lot of the quality of the paper was sacrificed during the switch to online only."There were just a lot of limitations," Wilson said. "We didn't feel like people really knew what we were doing."With a new office, an HTML website and the paper going back in print, Wilson is excited for the new school semester to start to show other UTPB students that the Mesa Journal is back and looking to be more involved. And so are the new staff members."When it was in print I read every issue," incoming Mesa Journal business manager Tom Glenn said. "When it went online I didn't look at it once."Glenn, a newcomer to the Mesa Journal fold, is just as excited."I think it's a really exciting time to bring the paper back to print while the university celebrates its 40th year anniversary," Glenn said.Sewell is also pleased with the compromise to go back in print and create a new website that will allow comments and input from the paper's readers."It's nice for students who work on it to be able to see a hard copy and show it off," Sewell said. "And with the new online features, students will be able to comment on the different stories--it just makes it more dynamic."Contact Chris Bartlett at 432-333-7782, email at cbartlett@oaoa.com, or on Twitter at @OAChrisBartlettCopyright: ___ (c)2013 the Odessa American (Odessa, Texas) Visit the Odessa American (Odessa, Texas) at .oaoa.com Distributed by MCT Information Services存倉

Setting the Pace
The all-wheel-drive Mini John Cooper Works Paceman is the most powerful Mini ever.新蒲崗迷你倉 By Samuel EeMINI'S 1.6-litre turbocharged engine has always impressed with its deep reserves of power despite a relatively small displacement, but now, there is an even more powerful version of this sparkling power plant and it is found in the Mini JCW Paceman.JCW stands for John Cooper Works and it denotes the sportiest variant of any Mini model range. This new-generation JCW engine has a twin-scroll turbo, petrol direct injection and variable valve control. So while the previous four-cylinder unit used to pump out 211 hp and 260 Nm (280 Nm with Overboost), this latest version is now capable of 218 hp and 280 Nm (300 Nm with Overboost). The Overboost function temporarily increases torque to 300 Nm at a slightly higher engine speed when you floor the throttle - from 2,100 to 4,500 rpm to be exact. And when this happens, the 1,420 kg JCW Paceman literally gives back thumping acceleration. The engine is a free-revving gem. Something this size shouldn't brim with torque, but it does. If you're driving in Singapore, rare will be the situation when it runs out of breath. For even greater urgency, there is a Sport mode to sharpen throttle response. To rein in all that oomph, the JCW Paceman gets the ALL4 all-wheel-drive system. The power is delivered to all four wheels either through a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission. By using an electromagnetic centre differential to distribute drive between the front and rear axles, the JCW Paceman's traction and stability are improved.Handling in fast corners is eminently confident, with a steering that is reassuringly sharp and well-weighted. The agility of the relmini storagetively tall Paceman (it is 1.53 m high) is great fun, and the faint exhaust backfire increases the enjoyment further.A surprise is the good level of ride comfort despite being stiffly sprung. The firmly tuned springs and dampers don't take away the pliancy of the suspension set-up, even though the Paceman JCW has a 10 mm lower ride height and beefier anti-roll bars. The comfort extends to the cabin. The Paceman is a crossover coup?m. Unlike other Minis, it is not a low-rider.Slightly tall with a sloping roof, this three-door model seats four in relatively spacious surroundings. With a 2,596 mm wheelbase, the two individual rear seats have good head and legroom. A six-footer can't complain. Even elbow room is taken care of with a cute little armrest. In front, the traditional Mini window controls on the the centre console have moved to the door panel. One quirk from behind the wheel, though, is the driver will notice that the lower part of the passenger side door mirror is actually obscured by the door. So no matter how tall or short you are, only about four-fifths of the image can be viewed. Riding on 18-inch wheels as standard (19-inch ones are optional), with a factory-fitted aerodynamic kit and two-tone paintwork with stripes, the Mini JCW Paceman is no shrinking violet. But with so much driving fun on tap, being discreet is unlikely to top your list of priorities.samuelee@sph.com.sgSPECSMini John Cooper Works PacemanEngine 1,598cc turbochargedTransmission 6-speed manual / 6-speed automaticMax power 218 hp @ 6,000 rpmMax torque 280 Nm @ 1,900-5,000 rpm (300 Nm with overboost)0-100 kmh 6.9 secsTop speed 226 kmh (M) / 224 kmh (A)CO2 emissions 172 g/km (M) / 184 g/km (A)Distributor Eurokars HabitatTel 6473 3777self storage

Missouri Fashion Week is part of St. Louis fashion uprising
Source: St.新蒲崗迷你倉 Louis Post-DispatchAug. 16--I hate to keep repeating myself, but St. Louis continues its surprising fashion resurgence. Those who remember the city's major garment district past never thought they'd see a worthwhile fashion scene again.Yet fashion upstarts continue to astound everyone, especially the fashion faithful.Maybe we're afraid that we'll get too much of a good thing, the bubble will burst and all will be lost. No, we're definitely afraid of that.We don't want to jinx it.Despite all logic, St. Louis now has a designer outlet mall in the region and another on the way. A fashion exhibit is debuting in town, one that received a launch party in New York with coveted fashion press and socialites from both states. The city's model agencies are constantly promoting and competing to recruit new talent, a fair number of whom are making splashes on international stages or in international campaigns. Two of the most recognizable top models in the world, male and female, are from the region. So is one of the top fashion writers -- not me -- Derek Blasberg of Harper's Bazaar.A medical goods manufacturing plant, Moxi Enterprises, has launched an impressive production arm to produce collections for local designers. Kellwood Co. and Brown Shoe Co. have signed a license to produce a highly anticipated fashion line for Sam Edelman, a shoe brand distributed worldwide. And anyone with a love of fashion has their pick of events, fashion shows and themed parties to choose from each week. But everyone remains cautiously optimistic, emphasis on the caution. As Missouri Fashion Week plans to launch its first year of festivities on Wednesday, co-founder Cillah Hall laughs and jokes about the not-so-warm reception she received when the event was announced.Aside from a lawsuit, which she merely called a distraction, she said that people fell into two camps: those who were immediately intrigued and excited and those who were immediately skeptical and apprehensive. But everyone agreed on one thing about Missouri Fashion Week."When I first started this, everybody thought the name sounded ... strange," Hall said throwing her head back in a full-throated laugh."Missouri," most people reasoned, doesn't sound sexy. Besides, few fashion weeks are named for states. Most opt for cities, but if the long-running Omaha Fashion Week can claim to be the premiere Midwestern fashion week, Missouri can't be any less sexy than that (apologies, Omaha)."When you name anything, it does sound strange when it's new and people aren't used to hearing it, but now I think they've finally heard it so many times that now it's finally making sense," Hall said. "Think about the first time someone said, 'I have to tweet.'"Hall said that part of the turned-up noses poo-pooing the name has to do with an inferiority complex. New York, Paris, Australia, Milan, Los Angeles, yes ... Missouri? ... um. We already have St. Louis Fashion Week, a respected entity with longevity and appeal. Did we really need another fashion venture?Aren't people bound to get burned out?"I definitely think that there is an audience for fashion here, and getting burned out or not is irrelevant," Hall said. "It's like living in LA and saying that people are goimini storageg to get burned out on all the movies and productions going on. Or living in New York and saying people are going to get burned out on all the Broadway shows."It just doesn't happen that way in the long run because you're giving people something new and interesting and something to look forward to every year. People have choices, and it becomes part of their lives, and if you do both, do it well, it just falls into place long-term I think."Hall's organization was sued by St. Louis Fashion Week for trademark infringement. The judge ruled that Hall's group didn't seem intent on harming St. Louis Fashion Week, but it was obviously benefiting from its success and fruition. Part of that benefit was the potential to confuse Missouri Fashion Week with St. Louis Fashion Week when it comes to promotion, audience and sponsorship. As a compromise, the judge said that Missouri Fashion Week could continue to operate under its original name as long as it proclaim in marketing materials and social media that it is not affiliated with St. Louis Fashion Week. Hall breathes out a heavy sigh and says that that's just fine with her and her team."Ultimately, we want to give respect to everyone in the marketplace," Hall said. Now, her focus is making the event, "which is like planning a wedding every day for four days," the best it can be. She has a roster of more than 20 designers who will be featured on the runway. None of those designers will be part of St. Louis Fashion Week, which will feature nearly 40 designers during its 10-day event, taking place a month later."We have no overlap, and that's what we have been saying from the beginning. This town has enough talent and now both events are fully committed to giving all of our designers an opportunity to shine," Hall said. She added that without Missouri Fashion Week there would have "literally been dozens of designers with nowhere to go for this kind of exposure."And about that name."If Missouri Fashion Week sounds strange (to you), you should be worried because you live in Missouri," Hall said. "I mean it's a great place. I believe that it's a great place. Let's own the name because this is where we live."That's something worth tweeting about.MISSOURI FASHION WEEKWhen --6 to 9:30 p.m., Aug. 21- 24Festivities --Red carpet welcome, marketplace of shops, artistic performances by Grand Center groups, fashion shows and cocktail hours.Where --Moto Museum at Grand Center, 3441 Olive StreetTickets --$25 to $35 at missourifashionweek.comSCHEDULEWednesday --Pronto! Penn Hills resident admits role in cocaine trafficking
Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteAug.存倉 16--A former Port Authority maintenance worker pleaded guilty this week to his role in a conspiracy to ship cocaine from Georgia and Nevada to Pittsburgh using Federal Express and United Parcel Service.John "Old Dude" Saban, 51, of Penn Hills, described by federal agents as a "large-scale cocaine trafficker" in Penn Hills and Garfield, also pleaded guilty to laundering money and carrying a gun while trafficking in drugs. The case started when a Los Angeles-area police drug team stopped Mr. Saban in July 2011 near L.A. when he went to a FedEx office and picked up a package containing $32,000. A search of his vehicle turned up another $252,000, and a police dog detected cocaine residue, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. At the time, Mr. Saban said he had been laid off by the Port Authority and was traveling to Los Angeles to recruit entertainers for his company, Changing Entertainment, which proved to be a fictitious entity.Federal agents later intercepted another package at Pittsburgh International Airport sent by Mr. Saban to R自存倉ndee Gilliam, of Tucker, Ga., identified as Mr. Saban's cocaine source. That package contained $28,000.Federal drug agents then tapped Mr. Saban's phone and the phones of others in the drug ring to identify the structure of the cocaine network and the shipment schedule from Atlanta and Las Vegas to Pittsburgh.Mr. Saban was arrested March 16, 2012, at his house on Springdale Drive in Penn Hills after agents watched him and other members of the ring pick up packages of cocaine at various UPS facilities around the region.Several other co-conspirators also were taken into custody that day after accepting cocaine deliveries, according to the DEA.Mr. Saban is among 10 people indicted in the case -- eight from the Pittsburgh region and two from Georgia. Several others also pleaded guilty this week.Sentencing for Mr. Saban is set for Dec. 3 before U.S. District Judge Nora Barry Fischer.Torsten Ove: tove@post-gazette.com or 412-231-0132.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Visit the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at .post-gazette.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉新蒲崗
