"We're going to need to get our feet under us fast in that first quarter," said the former Rutgers coach.What should help the Bucs in that regard is if Vick can't go, which appears likely, and Foles takes his place.I said, should. "We actually ran the offense a little faster when he first got in there," Jason Avant said.Foles immediately led the Eagles on a late second-quarter drive that garnered three points, then tore the Giants secondary apart with crisp passes and a remarkably crisp pace, especially given his inactivity."Under coach [Andy] Reid, the first quarterback took all the reps," Avant said. "That's not the case here. The backup gets reps with the No. 1s all the time. And in preseason they rotated so much, it's really not like you're losing anything.""I feel comfortable," Foles said. "In practice, you rep it and play at that tempo. I worked on it all offseason and through the camps, so you get used to it, smini storage when you get in there, you fit right in. Looked through the other prism, Foles should be preferred by Tampa's aggressive defense.Again, the operative word is should.Foles is not nearly as threatening or elusive with his feet as Vick is, although coach Chip Kelly mentioned the other day that in watching his performance in a 23-21 victory over Tampa Bay last season, "Nick kept a lot of drives alive with his feet in that game."Perhaps trying to win a starting job that some had speculated wasn't available, Foles was mistake-prone in preseason, and by its end, naming Vick as the starter was a formality. But the same traits that many saw as reason to name Foles No. 1 are still there. At 6-5, he is better equipped than Vick to see receivers and get them the ball running across the middle, especially from the pocket.That door swings both ways, too: Receivers may see the ball sooner coming out, especially given Foles' 12 o'clock arm slot. As a thrower, Vick plays smaller than his 6-1 frame. As a thrower, Foles plays taller.That's not a value statement, just an empirical one.But the best part about Foles can be found in his similarities with the man he is likely to replace Sunday. His second half against the Giants should imply that the Eagles can hit the ground running and passing in Tampa, grabbing a lead before the Bucs can make that adjustment Schiano spoke about yesterday."I said that when we made the decision that it felt like you need to have two quarterbacks," Kelly said yesterday. No frills, just quality - that is the motto of Japanese brand Muji, which is winning fans in Singapore and around the worldLifestyle brand Muji might not put its name or logo on any of its products, but it is happy to shout about their quality.mini storageDuring an interview with Life!, Mr Tadamitsu Matsui, chairman of Japanese retail company Ryohin Keikaku, Muji's parent company, emphasises no fewer than 10 times that Muji is synonymous not just with minimalist design, but also well-made products.The 64-year-old, who was in town last week for the opening of the seventh Muji store here in 313@Somerset, is not just paying lip service.When he took over as president and representative director of Ryohin Keikaku in 2001, Muji was in a steep decline. It had chalked up a deficit of 3.8 billion yen the year before and was closing stores worldwide. Its stock price plunged to just one-sixth of its original price.In an incredible turnabout, MrMatsui, who graduated from the University of Tsukeba in physical education, led Muji to a V-shaped recovery, where a long bout of depressed sales was followed by a sharp recovery. By 2007, Muji was hitting 162 billion yen in record sales.It has not looked back since. The brand made 188 billion yen (S$2.4 billion) in sales last year and posted a record- high pre-tax profit of about 11 billion yen between March and August this year.Today, Muji counts 300 stores in Japan and 208 stores in Asia, Europe and the United States. Besides a flagship store in New York, its products are also sold at the Museum of Modern Art store.It started as a subsidiary of supermarket group Seiyu in 1980 selling 40 household and food products in their stores, such as liquid detergent and canned snow crab flakes.Then known as Mujirushi Ryohin, it did well enough to open its first overseas store in London in 1991. The name Muji was adopted around 1999.It won fans with clean, fuss-free products that lived up to its name, which means "no brand, quality goods". But when the standards of both its goods and customer service dropped, so did sales."Customers were abandoning us," MrMatsui says in Japanese through an interpreter. "While we started out emphasising value, over time, the quality deteriorated. The price was cheaper but the quality was not there."We were not making products that stayed ahead of what customers needed. Muji products then were the same as those you could find at discount stores."So he came up with a 2,000-page manual on how to run the company, which he called Mujigram.The directive was sparked by what he saw during the opening of a new store: Store managers from other outlets arrived to help, but each had his own ideas about everything, from how to set up the displays to where to place the products."I realised that each store was dependant on the individual store manager and what he thought was right," recounts MrMatsui, who was born in Shizuoka Prefecture near the Pacific coast in the south-east."There were 100 ways of doing one thing. If each manager left, that would be the end of his store. We had to make sure everything was standardised."All work processes are detailed in his manual and standardisation is key across all areas, including product display, customer service, staff appearance and even how to clean the store.Employees can raise any problems they encounter, come up with solutions and tweak their copy of Mujigram. These updates are synced across all stores.About 60 per cent of Muji's 7,000- strong product inventory are household products, 35 per cent are clothes and linen, while food makes up the rest.While other companies pour millions into marketing their brands, anonymity is what Mr Matsui covets.He pulls out a nondescript white, cotton shirt to make his point. Cut off the price tag and shoppers would not know which shop it comes from, he says.It could belong to a high-end fashion house or a high-street clothing store, but it has remained one of Muji's staple products since it started 30 years ago."We focus on how comfortable it is to wear, such as how well it can absorb perspiration. We don't add starch or iron it. We make products which are very good and we compete in the market on the value of our products alone," he says. "We like to say we make invisible things. We make only what customers need, not create something that they儲存want."This explains why he is against full-blown promotional campaigns, such as using celebrities to tout products and releasing limited-edition ranges. Even discounts are given sparingly."Creating desire is not Muji's practice. Our products are good and with the right prices. We believe that if we have the money to spend on advertising, we might as well use that money to make our products better," he says."Using celebrities means using their star power to drive sales rather than banking on your product quality. In the long run, this weakens your core products."For three years in a row from 2011 to this year, Muji has been ranked as one of the top 25 companies to work for in Japan. The survey of companies of more than 250 workers was done by Great Place to Work Institute, a global research and consultancy firm.The attention to detail and quality has also paid off in other tangible ways. Customer complaints have plunged from 7,000 in 2000, a year before MrMatsui took over, to about 1,000 today.He recalls how, in 2002, the company had to recall products and take out six apology advertisements in the media in just half a year. The recall was due mainly to defective products."In half a year, that's a lot of advertisements to take out. I decided that we had to eliminate the complaints. So we went back to look at how our products and stores could be improved."This means sourcing for quality materials from the start, such as cotton from top cotton producers, and paying heed to shoppers' feedback. For example, Muji added silk to its linen clothes to make them more comfortable after getting comments from customers.One may liken Muji's success story to that of Swedish furniture giant Ikea, which also prides itself on no-frills yet stylish design at affordable prices.But MrMatsui disagrees. Turning around the company's fortunes has made it a middle-tier brand, he says, "not so cheap, and not a mass-market brand".He adds: "A lot of people say Muji is like Japanese Ikea. We have some common features, such as good products, but Ikea is cheap and focuses on the environment... Sorry to say, but I think Muji's products are able to last longer."He hopes to increase Muji's global presence to 50 countries, up from the current 23 by the time Japan hosts the 2020 Summer Olympics.In Singapore alone, there are plans to open three more stores over the next three years.MrMatsui says the company is looking at making Singapore the logistics hub for South-east Asia, even though the tiny city-state accounts for just 1 per cent of Muji's global sales. "Many of our products are made in this region and Singapore is in a good location from where we can oversee our operations."Plans are also in the works to bring its Muji Cafe and Meal here. The canteen- style cafe, which can be found in Japan and Hong Kong, serves dishes made with seasonal produce and meats. The first one opened in Kyoto in 2000, and its largest opened a year later in Muji's flagship store in Yurakucho, Tokyo.Not surprisingly, MrMatsui says the cafe experience will be an extension of Muji's product philosophy. "We don't use expensive ingredients, which is why we choose seasonal ones. We use natural ingredients too... We make sure that the food is safe."As the interview comes to an end, MrMatsui, who joined Muji in 1992 and worked his way up the ranks, hands this reporter his Japanese book, which he published in July.The tome on how to standardise one's business practices and manage employees hit the No. 1 spot on Japan's Amazon website and sold more than 100,000 copies.With the book's English title translated as "90 per cent of Mujirushi Ryohin is based on standards. Do your work simply", MrMatsui hopes to spread the word on how to build a great brand.The father of two daughters and a son who works in Singapore says: "It's important for all industries and any type of worker to know the importance and value of organisation structure and system. I wrote it not only for managers but also for everyone else in an organisation."Already, he is looking ahead. "In 10 years, I don't think I will be at Muji anymore. We will still be growing and we will have more problems to come. Source: The Santa Fe New MexicanOct.迷利倉 11--In 1888, Charles Edward Munroe, an American chemist, observed that when a block of explosive guncotton with the manufacturer's name on it was detonated next to a metal plate, the manufacturer's name was etched onto the plate by the force of the blast, a phenomenon that became known as the "Munroe effect." Nearly a century later, Gideon Sivan, an Israeli scientist working on civilian uses for explosives at the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, was studying the Munroe effect and its possible application in creating decorative images. The energy of an explosion could force a metal plate around the contours of a raised object on its surface. His search to find an artist to help him explore creative uses for explosives led him to Evelyn Rosenberg, an Albuquerque-based printmaker whose etching plates, Sivan was told, resembled his exploded pieces. "It was one of these things," Rosenberg told Pasatiempo. "He was like a cousin of a friend of an aunt, that kind of thing. So he got my name and came over one night and asked me if I wanted to go down to Socorro and blow something up. Of course, I said yes. You can't resist something like that." Rosenberg deemed the art-making technique she developed with Sivan "detonography." Nearly 30 years later, the technique is still Rosenberg's primary means of creating art, and a new book by the artist, Detonography: The Explosive Art of Evelyn Rosenberg, is available from the University of New Mexico Press.As part of her process, documented in the book in photographs by John Trotter, Rosenberg makes plaster molds of objects and covers them with a metal plate coated with C-1 plastic explosive. The shapes of the molds are imprinted into the metal plate after detonation. "My original thought was maybe this would be a way to make very big etching plates," Rosenberg said. "I had these huge vats of acid in my backyard. I thought this was maybe a less dangerous way to make the etching plates. But when I saw that the potential was not for making etching plates but for making the actual pieces themselves, I skewed in that direction."Rosenberg draws inspiration from objects of various cultures such as Japanese kimonos and ancient cylinder seals -- incised stone cylinders dating to ancient Mesopotamia that, when rolled out over clay or other surfaces, leave an imprint, similar to more modern printing techniques. Her work contains a blend of allegorical imagery, richly textured embroidery-like patterns, symbols, and human/animal hybrids. "I had studied comparative religion and philosophy and have always been interested in -- not exactly mythological themes, but the connection between nature and human beings and the way that people and animals are interconnected. Animals have as much soul, in their way, as people, and should be respected. In ancient cultures, people understood that."The description of process is an important element of the book. Rosenberg is the only artist working in the medium, and it gradually became important to her to document her working methods so the technique would not be lost. To illustrate all of the different elements involved, she developed one large piece called The Land o自存倉 Enchantment, inspired by New Mexico's natural beauty and spirit. She hired Trotter to photograph each stage of its development for inclusion in the book. She begins with a design template corresponding to the size of the metal plate and then traces the design on a thick sheet of aluminum foil, which she tools into a sculptural form to make a three-dimensional plaster mold. Rosenberg uses objects of all kinds, including organic materials that she presses into clay, in combination with the aluminum as a base for the molds. When covered with plaster and blasted at the EMRTC testing site, the resulting positive imprint in the metal reproduces the most minute details of the original object. In addition to the shape of a leaf, for instance, detonography also captures its small tears and thin veins. The finishing process takes the most time, as Rosenberg adds patinas and polishes the work until it achieves a lustrous, jewel-toned glow.The ability to render intricate detail using a dangerous and unruly medium like detonography led Rosenberg to experiment with various embroidered textiles. "I've been playing around a lot with quilts and scarves. Each has a different pattern. I'm trying to push that a little more. Anybody who's wearing a shirt or jacket with embroidery on it is in danger. I'll say, 'I really like your shirt,' you know? When people I know travel somewhere they always bring me some embroidery." An example in the book is Rosenberg's Kimono from 2011. "That kimono has pieces of fabric from all over the world," Rosenberg said. Her Heritage Quilt is part of a larger work called We the People, a memorial for Paul and Sheila Wellstone that is installed in Neighborhood House, an organization that assists low-income, immi- grant, and refugee families in St. Paul, Minnesota. "The people from that center all sent me fabric from their home countries." Rosenberg pressed the fabric into molds for her metal quilt, a series of rectangular patches, each with a unique textile design. "During the dedication, people came up and said to me 'Oh, that was my bridal dress,' or 'That was my mother's embroidery.' That was special."When it comes to explosives testing in New Mexico, it's easy to think of the state's history as the home of the first atomic bomb, detonated at Trinity Site on the White Sands Missile Range on July 16, 1945. But Rosenberg's work avoids atomic themes and references. The process involves forces strong enough to disintegrate or crumble the molds into pieces and send a metal sheet flying high into the air if it isn't heavy enough to withstand the force of the blast, but the violent nature of the work is in contrast to the imagery produced. "Everyone says, 'What's a little girl like you doing blowing things up?' You know, because I'm short. I always say I see this almost like a feminine process. Incumbent Monty Anderson, current board vice president, is running uncontested in District 1. Candidate Stephanie McClintock is running uncontested in District 5, the position being vacated by Pagel.The only contested race is in District 3, currently held by Idsinga. Candidates Mitchell Taylor and Jim Pegoraro are facing off for that board seat.Both candidates believe the new board's first order of business should be hiring the district's next superintendent."That decision is going to affect the years to come," said Taylor, who has lived in the district for 17 years.He said he envisions the new school board, working with the new superintendent, "setting goals, setting up a way to monitor those goals, doing follow up and follow through. The school board is the superintendent's supervisor," he said. "I don't think we'd be in the position we're in now if they (the school board) had supervised, monitored and had follow through."Taylor has logged countless volunteer hours with the district as the announcer for Battle Ground High School basketball and football games for the past seven or eight years and nine years on the board of the athletic boosters, eight years as president. He's also volunteered as a youth leader and coach."I have the foundation and skills needed to hit the ground running," said Taylor, who is a client services manager for a software company. "I've been learning about budgets, collective bargaining, the role of the school board and the principal. I'm willing to put forth the effort and time to help our school district succeed."Pegoraro, who has lived in the district for more than 50 years, attended Battle Ground schools. So did his wife and five children. Now his grandchild attends a district school.He emphasized the importance of the school boar自存倉 regaining the community's trust after the brouhaha over Bria's buyout."I believe that the board should be more forthright in their decisions and communicate with the community on what is happening and what is transpiring as far as what the board is involved in," Pegoraro said."I'd bring a unique perspective in my experience as a purchaser at a multimillion-dollar company to help maintain the fiscal responsibility that is required," he said. "I'm not a politician. I'm just a regular guy who's trying to help here. I would hope I would be the voice they would want to hear. My goal would be to use ethical and fiscal responsibility towards preparing the children for the next step in their lives."Plagued by challengesIn addition to Bria's buyout agreement, other challenges have plagued the Battle Ground school district recently.In February, voters failed to approve a four-year $103.4 million maintenance and operations levy. The levy was approved by 56 percent on the second try April 23.On Oct. 3, the district terminated the contract of Gregg Herrington, director of communications.The district is being audited by the state auditor's office. After Bria's departure, Duane Rose, the district's interim superintendent, requested both accountability and fiscal responsibility audits. Those audits began at the end of September.Encompassing 271 square miles, the north county school district is the largest geographically in Clark County.
