Tens of thousands of volunteers took part across the Western Hemisphere, including 38 who recorded 18,471 birds in Erie County.Local volunteers came across 74 species. They'd hoped for 90."Because of the weather, we had a fairly low species variety," said Michele Franz, Presque Isle Audubon Society president.The Erie County count began at about 7 a.m., which was not long after the day's low temperature of 19 degrees was recorded. The snowfall total for Erie on Dec. 14 was about 8 inches.According to a report that Franz will be sending to the National Audubon Society, the Erie count was led by 7,188 ring-billed gulls, followed by 3,241 Bonaparte's gulls and 1,320 red-breasted mergansers. The list also included two snowy owls, four bald eagles, 22 wild turkeys and 959 Canada geese.Birders counted at Presque Isle State Park, Scott Park and Asbury Woods.One group drove to sites around Erie County."They covered 106 miles in about four and a half hours," Franz said.She said the people do it because they're always looking for opportunities to go birding.Plus, the citizen science survey is a chance for everyday people to contribute information that can be used by scientists. "Almost everyone who has been in the hospital with the flu has underlying conditions and most have not been vaccinated."Also Monday, public health officials confirmed an increase of flu-like illness in the Pueblo County jail.Sheriff Kirk Taylor contacted the Pueblo City-County Health Department and thedepartment confirmed the increase in cases at the jail, said Nevin-Woods."The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office is working closely with the health department to minimize the spread of this illness in the jail," she said.Part of the intake process for new prisoners is to offer a flu shot, Taylor said Monday night. "But we can't make people take the shot."There's a few cases, and we wanted to get out in front of it, because we're in such close confines," he said.
